Welcome to the Ecopath with Ecosim course, 26-30 October 2026 at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), Barcelona, Spain. This course is organized to familiarize novice and experienced users with the core principles of the EwE modelling approach, some important applications, and the latest features of the software.
This course is organized by ICM-CSIC and Ecopath International Initiative (EII, Spain) in collaboration with the University of British Columbia, on behalf of the following projects: ActNow (EU H2020), MIORAI (EU H2020), MORSE (HORIZON Europe), Oceanic (Spain), and SURIMI (Horizon Europe).
The course will have two parts:
The first three days, October 26, 27 and 28, will be a generic introduction to the EwE approach, placing focus on the foundation Ecopath module (data needs, parameterization, mass-balancing) and Ecosim (temporal dynamics, data needs, model fitting). Ecospace (spatial-temporal dynamics) will be briefly explained.
The last two days, October 29 and 30, will focus on more advanced uses of Ecospace. These days will address topics such as setting up species distributions and movement, fisheries management, cumulative impact assessments, and the combined use of EwE with external tools, data and models.
The courses will alternate presentations with plenty of hands-on time.
Marta Coll Monton - Researcher and ecosystem modeller at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), Barcelona, Spain
