Welcome to the Ecopath with Ecosim course, 27-31 October 2025 at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), Barcelona, Spain. This course is organized to familiarize novice and experienced users with the core principles of the EwE modelling approach, some important applications, and the latest features of the software.
This course is organized on behalf of five projects, in alphabetical order: ActNow (EU H2020), GES4SEAS (EU H2020), MIORAI (EU H2020), Strategias Marinas (Spain), and SURIMI (Horizon Europe), and is endorsed by ICES.
The course will have two parts:
The first three days, October 27, 28 and 29, will be a generic introduction to the EwE approach, placing focus on the foundation Ecopath module (data needs, parameterization, mass-balancing) and Ecosim (temporal dynamics, data needs, model fitting). Ecospace (spatial-temporal dynamics) will be briefly explained.
The last two days, October 30 and 31, will focus on more advanced uses of Ecospace. These days will address topics such as setting up species distributions and movement, fisheries management, cumulative impact assessments, and the combined use of EwE with external tools, data and models.
The courses will alternate presentations with plenty of hands-on time.
Marta Coll Monton - Researcher and ecosystem modeller at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), Barcelona, Spain
Jeroen Steenbeek - EwE core programmer at Ecopath International Initiative (EII), Barcelona, Spain
Jacob Bentley - Principal Scientist and marine ecosystem modeller at Natural England, London, UK
Villy Christensen (hopefully) - Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada, and scientific father of EwE 6
The course is free for participants from the contributing projects. For others, the fee will be:
Introductory course: 600 EUR
Advanced course: 400 EUR
Introductory and Advanced course: 800 EUR
Registration was open to the contributing projects from April 15 to May 15, 2025 via project communication channels only. We will proceed to contact all pre-registrants to secure their spots at the course.
We're dreadfully sorry, but we will not be able to open registration to the public as we had originally planned; we received more pre-registrations than we can accommodate.
If you missed this course and wish to get notified for a future instalment, please contact us via the email below and let us know.
Although nothing is final yet, we wish to let you know that we are in discussion with ICES to start organizing a second, annually repeating EwE course in Copenhagen starting 2026. Stay tuned!
