The Northern Colorado/Fort Collins chapter of Engineers Without Borders began working with Utz Che’ in November, 2022. Utz Che’ approached our chapter after observing work we had done in the community of La Bendición, one of its founding members, beginning in 2016.
Along with La Bendición, Utz Che’ works with more than 40 indigenous communities on various issues, including land rights, local sovereignty, water issues and food security.
Utz Che’ asked for EWB’s help in two areas: the design and planning of an agricultural training center with classrooms and meeting space, and help four surrounding communities -- La Bendición, El Tarral, El Astinal and La Trindad.
The learning center, La Pecesita, was its top priority. Utz Che’ envisions La Pecesita as a community center for all communities involved with Utz Che’ with a special focus on providing educational programs and training. These communities are multicultural with a rich history and ambitious plans. They hope to create a new Guatemala by investing in projects for reforestation, forest management, organic and diverse agriculture (particularly outside of sugar cane production), political reforms, protection of rights, and improved water consumption. La Pecesita will enable the communities to come together in a shared space for training and skill-building.
La Bendición is a community of about 500, made up almost entirely of people of Mayan descent who were forcibly displaced from their traditional home in the highlands in the wake of Guatemala’s civil war. In the early 2000s, they settled on a ruined coffee plantation in the municipality of Escuintla in the southern part of the country.
El Potrero is part of a village called El Tablón which is located in the northern part of the municipality and department of Sololá. The Myan language spoken is Kakchiquel. The community is approximately 350 residents making up 85 households.
Bramadero is a small rural community with 107 inhabitants (37 households) closely related to a bigger community named San Rafael. This community is highly dependent on agricultural cycles and this represents the main income generating activity. The time spent by the community and the children to collect water is one of the biggest problems, also the lack of access to water in the rainy season.
