Earth Week Celebration 2018 hosted in partnership with Cascadia College.

Pre-Earth Week Events:

WEDNESDAY APRIL 11TH

    • 3:30pm - Save by Savoring: How Chocolate Can be a Vehicle for Social Change

Location: Mobius Hall

Simran Sethi, a fellow at the Institute for Food and Development Policy and author of the award-winning book, Bread, Wine, Chocolate: The Slow Loss of Foods We Love, will share insights on how the cocoa industry can, and should, be a driver for social and environmental change. The event will include a guided tasting of four distinct cocoa origins as a means of helping chocolate lovers better understand craft chocolate and make decisions that will support a more sustainable chocolate industry.

MONDAY APRIL 16TH

    • 12:00 - 3:30pm - Alternative Transportation: Carbon Footprint Reduction

Location: Near Bus Stations and Carpool Lanes of the South Parking Garage

ASUWB will be tabling on Monday, April 16th to educate on the importance of student awareness of environmental and sustainability issues on our campus, as well as providing festive sustainable goodies for to students who choose to reduce their carbon footprint by carpooling/busing.

    • 3:00 - 4:00pm - Research in Progress: Flexible and Responsive Scheduling for E.V. Charging/Discharging: Toward Clean and Sustainable Transportation

Location: UW1-103

Speaker: Mahmoud Ghofrani, Asst. Prof., STEM - Electrical Engineering

Electric vehicles do not generate carbon emissions, but the methods for producing their electricity often do. Utilizing fossil-fuel technologies to power electric vehicles increases their net emissions and significantly decreases their environmental benefits. The solution is to incorporate cleaner energy sources, like wind and solar, to bring electric vehicles closer to their goal of being emission-free. The E.V. project is to develop a responsive and flexible charging/discharging control model to increase the use of clean energy and decrease the impacts of E.V. charging/discharging on the electric grid. This project is to develop control models to address the limitations of the current inflexible E.V. charging practices.

TUESDAY APRIL 17TH

    • 11:00 - 12:00pm - Campus Sustainability Tour

Location: Meet Outside of Mobius Hall (CC3)

Student-led Campus Sustainability Tour, Tuesday April 10th. All are welcome. Join us to take a tour of campus and learn about sustainability on campus! Have you ever wondered why the grass in front of CC3 isn’t mowed? Or have you heard that toilets are flushed with rainwater, and that there are roofs that grow plants at Cascadia? Come and find out about all the great things going on on campus!

    • 12:30 - 1:30pm - Food Forest Planting

Location: Food Forest

Get involved with the grounds team in their efforts to get the Food Forest ready for the growing season by planting veggie starts! No sign-up necessary, just meet at the Food Forest whenever you have time.

    • 1:00 - 2:00pm - Free Little Library Launch

Location: Food Forest

Don’t know how to forage for food in the Food Forest? Why not try your hand at foraging for books? Join Cascadia Student Government for the ribbon cutting ceremony of our brand new Little Library.

    • 1:30 - 4:30pm - Unpaving Paradise

Location: Promenade

The UWB Sustainability Club will be hosting an event to bring awareness to the forested area that was once between UW1 and UW2. As our campus continues to grow, we will see significant loss of forested areas that bring not only an aesthetic aroma and learning component to the UWB campus but create habitat for other species to flourish.

WEDNESDAY APRIL 18TH

    • 11:40am - 1:10pm - Pollinator Bed Planting

Location: Campus Garden

Meet us at the campus garden beds on Wednesday, April 18, from 11:40am to 1:10pm to plant a native shrub hedgerow to support our pollinators!

    • 12:00 - 3:00pm - Soils Lab

Location: MoLab

Swing by our mobile laboratory parked between the library and Food Forest to hang out with Midori Sakura and learn about our amazing wetland soils. It's NOT Dirt!

    • 3:00 - 5:00pm - Food Waste Prevention Workshop

Location: UW1-103

Speaker: Karen May from King County Solid Waste Division

Join us for an exciting and informative event all about food waste and how we can prevent it! Achieving Community Transformation (ACT) is hosting a food waste prevention workshop to provide students with the understanding of the impact of food waste and its effects on the environment and communities. This workshop will look at where our food comes from and provide useful tips for food waste prevention. The event will start with a viewing of the documentary Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story and conclude with guest speaker Karen May from King County Solid Waste Division, facilitating an interactive discussion. Recology will be tabling at the event. No registration is required.

THURSDAY APRIL 19TH

    • 11:00 - 2:00pm - Sustainability Festival

Location: Promenade/Plaza

The UW Bothell Sustainability Office is hosting our 2nd annual Sustainability Festival! Get ready to jam out to music brought to you by UWAVE Radio, check out the Electric Vehicle Car Show and eat tasty food from our partner Taco Time! Also featured, over 30 Community Partners showcasing how they incorporate sustainability into their daily work! See the event information page (under the Thursday tab) for a complete list.

    • 2:00 - 3:00pm - Research in Progress: Tour of the Upland Conifers

Location: Meet at the Ancestors (sturdy shoes and umbrella recommended)

Join UW Bothell environmental scientist, Warren Gold, Associate Professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences and Mary Gates Research Award winner, Jessica Kunder, Senior – Biology, on a tour of the trees on upper campus which Gold and Kunder have surveyed as part of their ongoing research.

FRIDAY APRIL 20TH

    • 10:30 - 1:00pm - Garden Work Party

Location: Campus Garden (between the Sports Field and North Parking Garage)

Join us in the UW Bothell/Cascadia College Campus Garden for our spring work party! Assist in planting, harvesting, weeding, or turning compost as needed in the campus garden space between the sports field and the north parking garage.

    • 11:40am - 1:10pm - Pollinator Bed Planting

Location: Campus Garden

Meet us at the open space just south of the North parking garage on Friday, April 20, from 11:40am to 1:10pm to plant native grasses, bulbs and flowers to our pollinators!

SATURDAY APRIL 21ST

    • 10:00am - 1:00pm - Volunteer Restoration Work Party

Location: North Creek Forest right off of 112th Ave NE

Help UW REN with the restoration of their site at North Creek Forest! Remove invasives and plant natives!

SUNDAY APRIL 22ND

    • 7:00 - 9:00pm - FREE Film Screening

Location: North Creek Events Center

Film: Chasing Coral

Join us for a free film screening of the powerful film, Chasing Coral; a documentary about the health of our coral reefs. Free popcorn, pizza and parking provided!
