Orthodox community: this term is used to identify the Greek Christian Orthodox community of Komotini. It was chosen to call them directly Orthodox in order not to cause confusion with the Muslim minority that is also included in the Greek community. The term Christian was not included either throughout the text but the reader should assume the Orthodox spoken about here are Christians.
Muslim community: this term is used to identify the Greek Muslim community of Komotini. The term Muslim was used in order not to confuse with the community’s different ethnicities. Indeed, the Muslim community of Western Thrace is diverse and composed of different ethnicities. Therefore, the term Muslim was used in order to give a more global overview of the community’s diverse identity.
Minority: ‘a culturally, ethnically, or racially distinct group that coexists with but is subordinate to a more dominant group. (…) As such, minority status does not necessarily correlate to population.’ (Britianica Encyclopedia, 2008) Therefore, the Muslim community is defined as a minority because it is ethnically and culturally different to the dominant group and culture of Komotini and more generally Greece, regardless of the size of the community in Komotini, in these terms the Muslim community is a minority.
Mufti: ‘A Muslim legal expert who is empowered to give rulings on religious matters.’ (Oxford Press Dictionary, 2017). In Komotini, the mufti is the one who decided on the Muslim community’s judicial and religious matters. He holds a very important role for the Muslim community of Komotini.
National Identity: ‘National identity is one's identity or sense of belonging to one state or to one nation. It is the sense of a nation as a cohesive whole, as represented by distinctive traditions, culture, language and politics.’ (Wikipedia, 2017) Therefore, as one can see from this definition religion isn’t mentioned. It might qualify as a special characteristic but shouldn’t define who belongs or not to one nation as man more aspect characterise a nation’s cohesiveness.
Positive Discrimination: ‘the act of giving advantage to those groups in society that are often treated unfairly because of their race, sex, etc.’ (Cambridge Press Dictionary, 2017) When positive discrimination is mentioned with the minority in University, it is meant that the government has set in place policies that advantage the minority to enter Greek university on lower marks than people from the majority. This is positive discrimination because it gives an advantage to the minority to promote their inclusion in Greek society and recognises that they need this benefit because they don’t have the same opportunities as the Orthodox Greek.
