Throughout Earth's history, our planet has changed drastically- from ice ages, to volcanic eruptions, to continents drifting. Many extinctions occurred over very long periods of time as the environment changed and a species failed to adapt through successful reproduction.
Extinction in history is very common- 99% of species that ever once lived are now extinct. The fossil record is our greatest source of evidence for evolution and is how we know about extinct species of the past.
Humans have DRASTICALLY changed environments. We are changing the environment in ways that certain species are no longer fit to survive. Deforestation, pollution, and climate change have drastically reduced the populations of many species. Species that lack genetic diversity have a low chance of long term survival. It is estimated that by the year 2100, 50% of modern species will be endangered or extinct.
