This past Valentine's Day, instead of waking up to a special message from a special someone, I found a new album by The Lumineers waiting for me, which, might I add, is even better than a Valentine’s date. Automatic consists of 11 tracks and 32 minutes of alternative folk music that the band is known for.
The Lumineers, founded by Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites, has been a band since 2005, making this album a celebration of 20 years in the music industry. In the Instagram post announcing this new album, Wesley Schultz said that “the album explores some of the absurdities of the modern world, like the increasingly blurry line between what’s real and what’s not.”
My take on the album? Lyricism, stunning. Music, not so much. They use their songwriting to touch on a number of topics, from political to failed relationships. It is a “quieter” album that is more reflective of their past four albums and requires some thought to fully understand their message. However, some of the music did not land well with me. I noticed an increase in electronic instrumentals from their previous albums, which was a feature I valued in the past.
Regardless of my instrumental grievances, this is a beautiful album that deserves more recognition and appreciation.

Short n’ sweet; an album capturing love, hate, and everything in between. Sabrina Carpenter has done it again.
With the songs of the summer, “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” the album had a lot to live up to. In my opinion, the album is more than I could’ve asked for. Carpenter
went from a sad girl album, “emails i can’t send”, to an upbeat album about every past
relationship she’s had and how she’s healed.
What I love most about her rebranding is the “Short n’ Sweet Tour.” The tour is not just her singing, it’s her performing. Take a 90s sitcom like Full House and put it into a magnetic performance with an incredible set. From featuring her boyfriend, actor Barry Keoghan, in the “Please Please Please” music video to working with actress Jenna Ortega, Sabrina is killing the pop music game right now.
While she has sad ballads like “Dumb & Poetic” and “Lie to Girls” she also has her classic upbeat songs like “Good Graces” and “Taste.” Not only that, but she has a little country featured in a few songs like “Slim Pickins’” and “Coincidence.” Those two songs made this album skippable for me initially. Shortly after I listened to the whole album again, my opinion changed. I was definitely not expecting another artist to add a country twang to their music. Listen after listen, I’ve come to the conclusion that this is a no-skip album. I can confidently say that Sabrina Carpenter has done it again and I can’t wait for more.

Brat summer might be over, but the pop girlies are just getting started. Over the past year, a new genre of pop stars has skyrocketed to the spotlight—Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, and Chappell Roan are leading a new wave in pop music. With catchy beats and fun but meaningful lyrics, many people relate to their songs.
The one thing that sets them apart from other artists is their confident personas. Each one has a distinct personality that they don’t shy away from. Sabrina Carpenter has a flirty, fun, entirely honest personality that shines through her hits like the fan-famous outros from ‘Nonsense,’ and her summer hit ‘Espresso.’ Charli XCX has a rebellious vibe with her techno-pop hits from her ‘brat’ album, while Chappell Roan has a fun-embracing, authentic personality with songs like ‘HOT TO GO’ and ‘Femininomenon.’
These songs and distinct personas make them a lot more lovable opposed to the manufactured personalities that the older generation of pop stars used to gain their fame. I can’t wait for their new releases, where I know they’ll be brattier than ever.

Someone to recently gain incredible popularity on social media may come as a bit of a shock, Gypsy Rose Blanchard. She was released from prison after serving 7 years for persuading an online boyfriend to kill her mother. Gypsy suffered from Munchausen’s by proxy, meaning her mother lied to and manipulated Gypsy, doctors, and those around her in order to convince them all that Gypsy was terminally ill. Gypsy’s story has been shared across social media and gained more popularity through Hulu’s “The Act” which was released in 2019. Since her release this past December, there has been significant controversy as to whether her actions were justified or not. Some support Gypsy, and want to see her live her life the way she chooses to, but on the other hand, some want to see her back in prison for what she did. As of now, it seems Gypsy will continue to live her life in fame, alongside her husband Ryan Anderson, whom she married in 2022 while still in prison.

Jo Koy was the first Filipino-American comedian to ever host a major television/film awards show. His tenure, however, was definitely not well received.
Beginning with his monologue, Koy went on a spree of jokes that were sometimes funny, sometimes not. The entire time he looked completely nervous, like he knew that he was experiencing a train wreck in real time but didn’t know how to stop it. The monologue was peppered with jokes that were… questionable, to say the least. A joke about Ryan Reynolds’s eyes and Taylor Swift’s NFL appearances was met with flat expressions — and a torrent of posts by Swifties on social media who were angry about the joke. There was an excessive bit about how long Oppenheimer was (which the cast did not seem to be enjoying) and a joke about how Barbie was a movie about “dolls with big boobies” — most definitely missing the point of the movie. Throughout the entire monologue, he made disclaimers saying that half the jokes weren’t written by him, and the ones that were, “they’re the ones you’re laughing at”. In all, it was a painful and awkward thing to watch.
Jo Koy is a very successful stand-up comedian, but his budding career as an awards show host is effectively over.

The new Mean Girls has taken social media by storm. The movie is a remake of the original Mean Girls movie and the Broadway version.
I had the pleasure of seeing the movie recently, and I would give it top reviews. But many people think otherwise. The movie was advertised in such a way that it didn’t appear to be a musical, and this had moviegoers shocked. This upset people who liked the movie version and not the Broadway version. Additionally, many fans thought the music was too depressing when the songs were supposed to be energetic. The song that featured the most complaints on TikTok was ‘Stupid with Love,’ sung by Cady about her crush. Hundreds of TikTok videos are comparing the Broadway song to the movie version and complaining about how the new version lacks emotion. In addition to the music, some people also disliked the acting, saying it was forced.
In my opinion however, these opinions are misplaced. These opinions operate under the assumption that the new movie was supposed to top the originals. You’ll never beat the original, but the movie still has its strongpoints. The movie version isn’t supposed to be as energetic as the broadway version because the toned down singing fits better in cinema. The changes made by production largely make sense. Overall, the movie checked all the boxes for me. Don’t forget to wear pink on Wednesdays!

The prequel to the Hunger Games, A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, has been a hit in theaters. The origins of the Hunger Games captured audiences’ hearts and has been a blockbuster hit in theaters, but is the book different from the movie?
The short answer is yes, there are several differences between the two. Despite this, Eastview students have enjoyed the movie. Junior Evie Swenson says, “It was really cool to see the book come to life”. The biggest differences between the book and the movie came in the details. There were changes in the tribute backgrounds and storylines. Since it’s an adaptation from the book, it has significant plot changes. To keep the movie relatively short, some of the storylines before the games were cut or changed from the book. Since the book is over 600 pages, and the movie is less than three hours, some of the characters’ backstories and plot lines had to be shortened. Evie says, “It didn’t make the move any less enjoyable, it was just surprising to see the differences”.
Overall, both the book and the movie are amazing, and the changes made didn’t affect the plot too drastically. Audiences loved the movie, but leave with the question, what would it have looked like if it stuck to the book?

A viral video of an elderly man - by the name of John Robinson - ranting to the government via TikTok about the possibility of women being drafted, sparked a new trend. Robinson’s 2-minute and 30-second video is captioned “You are not drafting my daughter”. He spends the entire duration of the video lambasting the U.S. military for resorting to drafting women because they fell short of recruitment numbers. His video has 6.9 million views and 1.1 million likes.
Since Robinson posted his video, many other creators have participated in this discussion. One creator with the username “jddelay1017” suggested sending the entire prison population to fight in the non-existent World War III. Other videos have been posted of fabricated clips of Joe Biden stating that women are being added to the draft, but such videos have no basis. Following a common social media pattern, this discussion has evolved into a satirical trend.
The trend itself involves girls and women captioning pictures of members of the military with casual and humorous dialogue. One well-known example is a photo of an army soldier driving an army vehicle with the caption “IDK where I’m going I’m literally about to cry”. This trend is similar to another social media trend from early 2020 when social media felt threatened by World War III. This trend entailed women filming or photographing themselves doing household chores, with a caption along the lines of “As a woman, I was born to serve and obey my husband, and not go to war”. Both of these trends advocate for women not being included in the draft, but by opposite means.
This viral trend is a hilarious spin on a largely baseless conversation. There have been no recent efforts by the U.S. to incorporate women into the draft, so the fact that this discussion is occurring in the first place is somewhat comical. Ultimately, this trend poses an amusing if inaccurate portrayal of women in the military, having built off of trends from the past with the same purpose.

Even if you aren’t a Swiftie, you have probably heard that Taylor Swift released a new album recently. On October 27th, 2023, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) graced Taylor Swift fans and the world as a whole. Starting with the release of Fearless (Taylor’s Version) on April 9th, 2021, Taylor Swift has been working towards owning all of her music. 1989 was Taylor’s fifth studio album, originally recorded in 2014. The original studio album, won 5 awards, including 2 Grammys. 1989 remained in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 for a full year after its release. It was one of the best selling albums of 2015. According to The Times UK, “Taylor Swift’s latest album of re-recorded songs surged to the top of the US charts as the most successful new entry in almost a
In the re-recorded versions, the lyrics, sound, and layout of the songs are generally the same. In comparing both versions of the songs, you can hear Taylor’s growth, both as a singer and a person. Her voice has grown but her songs remain timeless. Along with the 17 songs that we already know and love, 5 vault tracks were released as well. These songs were written along with the familiar songs, just never released. Until now, that is.
Taylor’s first vault track on the album is titled “Slut!” The song’s name is eye catching and risky. The song itself is a modern love story. One that Taylor Swift has come accustomed to while growing up in the spotlight. I would rate the first vault track a 3.92/5 stars. It is a great way to kick off the vault tracks.
The following song is called “Say Don’t Go.” The song begins with deeper vocals and is accompanied by a feeling all to familiar, as relationships end, we often hope for more from the other side. Swift expresses these feelings of rejection and being let down. I would rate, “Say Don’t Go” 3.79/5 stars.
Next up is a song from which one of the most popular trend sound bites was pulled from. “Now That We Don’t Talk” shows Taylor’s approach to getting over a romantic relationship and how she came out the other side stronger. The sound bite pulled inspired people on TikTok to examine their own past relationships and personal growth. This song is one of my favorites on the album and gets 3.96/5 stars.
Continuing on, “Suburban Legends” highlights the expectations v. reality that one may experience in a relationship. It can be awful when things don’t go to plan, but beautiful things can come from that situation. I am giving the forth vault track 3.42/5 stars.
The album has impacted more than just Taylor Swift. 1989 has been rumored to be about Harry Styles since its release in 2014. With the addition of these emotional vault tracks, specifically the 5th vault track, “Is It Over Now?”, Harry Styles is rumored to have lost over 100 thousand followers on Instagram. I would rate “Is It Over Now?” an even 4/5 stars.
I analyzed all of the vault tracks, rating them in 6 categories: sing-along ability, story telling, general sound, word impact, listen-all-the-way-through-ness, and hype-ability. As with most of the songs the ratings will likely change the longer I have to listen to them. Considering that all of the ratings for the surprise songs are above a 3/5 stars, Taylor did amazing work on this album. The surprise songs were gifts. Now the question is, which album will she rerelease next?

One thing that all Eastview students can (or should) agree on is that Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is the best thing that happened in 2023. With 52 U.S. stops and a whopping 146 global stops, it's predicted that the tour will sell about $2.2 billion in tickets alone, which would crush current records by a landslide. With two of her shows being in Minneapolis, I had the opportunity to go and see her live on night two. To say Taylor Swift is an incredible performer is an understatement. With vocals that never wavered, high-energy choreography, multiple costume changes, and a lengthy 44-song set list, there’s no question that she is a great performer and loves her fans. It’s also important to acknowledge her backup dancers and singers, who were all extremely talented and helped make the show even better. It was clear that they had put countless hours of rehearsal in before the tour.
The energy that filled the stadium was like no other, every fan felt the anticipation and rush of adrenaline when Taylor Swift entered the stage, which was truly such a surreal experience. Any Eastview student who appreciates performing arts would understand just how influential this concert tour is, and I am eternally grateful that I was able to experience it live.

This summer, Hollywood was filled with its fair share of drama. One of the biggest surprises was the announcement of the divorce between Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. In May of 2019, Joe and Sophie got married in Las Vegas, however, in early September, they announced their divorce after 4 years of being together. Another huge divorce broke the internet when Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez announced their split in July of this year. The divorce of this couple was a shock to the world and although they kept their relationship mostly private, many fans were sad to hear the news. One year after Britney Spears was finally freed from her 13-year contract with her agent, which left her with little say in her life decisions, it was revealed that Britney had gotten married to Sam Asghari, an Iranian-American model and actor who starred in one of Britney's earlier music videos. Within 14 months of their marriage, reports of the divorce started to surface, with both sides claiming that the other had cheated on them.
This summer, Hollywood was heartbroken when it was revealed that up-and-coming Euphoria star Angus Cloud had passed away at the age of 25. His father had died just a week prior, and it was revealed that Angus had really struggled with the loss of his father. Many turned to social media to pay tribute to Angus Cloud’s legacy. When news broke out that the beloved host of The Price is Right, Bob Barker, had passed away in August at the age of 99, many game show fans were heartbroken. Outside of hosting the popular game show, Barker worked to expose animal cruelty in the entertainment industry along with helping the treatment of animals in the US and internationally. Many called him the “World's Greatest MC” and the Price is Right won’t be the same without him. Early in July, another talented star Coco Lee passed away after falling into a coma. While the name might not seem familiar, you definitely would be able to recognize her voice. Coco Lee gained popularity for voicing Mulan and singing “Reflections” in the movie. In 2001 Coco took the stage at the Oscars, singing “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” It was later revealed that Coco was struggling with depression, which ultimately took her life.

If you read this article’s title and thought that the Barbie movie was just about some bimbo dolls who came to life, well then you really need to watch that film again because it seems we were watching two different movies. The Barbie movie was far more than just another summer blockbuster for us to move on from, despite how hate from critics may make it seem.
When the Barbie movie was released critics went into a frenzy about how the movie didn’t meet their expectations. Hate towards the movie came from all directions, from critics writing that the whole movie was anti-men, to others arguing there actually wasn’t enough feminism. Between these two groups were the ordinary fans of the movie who were moved and brought to tears by the film’s relatable themes and messages.
The way I see the movie is the complete opposite to the critics. Barbie was written with immense depth, and the message displayed was undoubtedly meaningful. The main theme of the Barbie movie is the reality women’s struggles and how they are perceived. The movie's message was for all girls, telling them that “we see you.” Another thing to notice is that the hate on the Barbie movie and its themes often aren’t even well grounded. One argument for example from billionaire Elon Musk is that the movie focuses too much on themes of patriarchy. He went as far as saying that "if you take a shot every time Barbie says the word ‘patriarchy’, you will pass out before the movie ends.” Its easy to see from this that the critiques from men like Elon are largely surface level, failing to look at what the film is really communicating. Putting everything together, its easy to see that critiques of the Barbie movies are plain poorly executed, and the reasoning behind them will forever baffle me to my core.

With her hit song, “Summertime Sadness,” breaking over one billion streams on Spotify, it is undeniable that Lana Del Rey is one of the most popular artists of this decade. Eastview’s students are no exception to this rule; Lana Del Rey frequently appears on many students’ playlists. Her recently released album, Did You Know There is a Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard, has ignited a new wave of popularity. Now taking time off from her job at the Waffle House, Lana Del Rey is touring across the U.S.
Sadly for Eastview and the midwest as a whole, Lana Del Rey’s tour has been confined to the American South. Sticking to her brand of skipping over large cities, Lana has so far been in Franklin, Huntsville, West Palm Beach, and a few other southern cities. Her setlist typically includes 19 songs, many of which are her top hits.
I was lucky enough to get tickets to the September 23rd show in West Palm Beach. With help from her opener, Zella Day, Lana Del Rey put on an amazing show. For being such a large artist, she set a personal mood by performing with just her three extraordinary backup singers, five dancers, a bassist, and a pianist. One of my favorite songs was “Young and Beautiful,” which is memorable for many Eastview students who have taken Honors American Literature. The song is a hallmark of The Great Gatsby unit as “Young and Beautiful” highlights the soundtrack of the 2013 film with Leonardo DiCaprio.
As Lana Del Rey puts on her 2023 tour, it is undeniable that she is only growing in popularity. For me and many other Eastview students, her songs will continue to be favorites, and we eagerly anticipate a Midwest tour.

The release of 1989 Taylor’s Version has been a highly anticipated event, both in pop culture and the Eastview community. There is a lot of anticipation specifically regarding the songs added to the album for the rerecording, also known as vault tracks. Everyone from students to administration is looking forward to the release on October 27.
Athletic Director Mr. Percival is a Swiftie himself, having attended the Eras Tour in June. He says, “With the vault tracks it is almost like reading a book and wondering what were the chapters that didn’t make the final publication.” The vault tracks are new songs added to the album during the rerecording that didn’t make the final cut the first time around, but Taylor deemed album-worthy. They are a fun twist to the album and shed light on the era of Taylor’s life the album took place in.
The most surprising vault track according to senior Rhea Saarang is titled “SLUT!”. She says it doesn’t fit the theme for 1989 because it is an upbeat pop album with song titles like “Welcome to New York” and “Blank Space”. Fans speculate on the topic of this song and the direction Taylor is going to take it in.
When 1989 was first released in 2014, it became an instant sensation. Its timing meant that many high schoolers today listened to it as young kids. Rhea says, “1989 was the album that really got me into Taylor Swift in the first place.” This album is a reminder of childhood for many teenagers and brings back many nostalgic memories.
It is also significant to the Eastview community because of its feature in the 2023 bravo show The Big Apple. “Welcome to New York” was a featured song in Bravo, and as Mr. Percival puts it, “it was the start of an unforgettable show.”
Taylor Swift may be an international pop star, but her songs strike home in the hearts of many and bring back many memories—from childhood to an unforgettable Eastview event.

While many watched the Super Bowl for football this year, even more tuned in to watch Rihanna’s comeback after a multi-year hiatus from the music industry. Many around the world have been waiting for her to return to the stage, and it was probably the most important factor in this year's Super Bowl, which recorded the highest audience in six years. There were many mixed reviews about the halftime show on social media, with some praising Rihanna's performance, while others criticized it as underrated compared to previous artists.
"Rihanna's performance was captivating and entertaining," said an Eastview student. "The music was of high quality, the lighting and pyrotechnics helped create a great experience, and the choreography was creative and engaging." Rihanna is one of the most outstanding performers of the century and has a long list of well-known songs that undoubtedly contributed a lot to how people appreciated her performance. However, for some, it wasn't enough and they didn't really like the show. A freshman at Eastview ranked the performance a “7/10 because although it was good, there were parts that did not satisfy.” Some argue that Rihanna's performance was not as enjoyable as previous performances such as Prince, Michael Jackson, or even the 2016 collaboration between Coldplay, Beyonce, and Bruno Mars.
Despite the controversial reviews, most music fans were just happy to see one of the biggest stars in the world making a comeback on one of the biggest possible stages. The excitement was multiplied when the star announced her pregnancy with her second child during the performance. Many also noticed Rihanna’s promos for her brand Fenty Beauty through a quick pause to fix her makeup with the Fenty Beauty palette and dressing all the backup dancers with Fenty outfits. Overall Rihanna’s performance was very popular and took over all forms of social media throughout the days after the Super Bowl and many are patiently waiting to see what Rihanna releases next.
Top 10 Pop Culture Moments of 2022
By Reagan Mushett - Staff Writer - January 16th, 2023
2022 was a year to remember, especially in the pop culture industry. From record-breaking albums to celebrity conflict, there have been many memorable moments this year. Here are, in no particular order, ten of the most unforgettable moments of 2022:
#1: Will Smith’s Oscar Slap
Our jaws are still on the floor from Will Smith slapping Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. While Smith originally laughed at the joke, when he saw his wife’s face, he lashed out. As a result of this slap, Smith’s actions were condemned and he has been banned from the Oscars for 10 years. Did Rock deserve to be slapped? Did Smith overreact? It is an ongoing debate.
#2: Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard
The defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard was a very public trial that brought about many jokes via TikTok regarding their accounts, testimonies, and behavior in court. After six weeks of chaos, the trial ended in favor of Depp with him receiving $10.4 million in damages, but there is still scrutiny about the verdict.
#3: Wordle
The word game that took phones by storm. As it gained fame, people would post their results on social media and the game was later bought by the New York Times. It became so popular, in fact, that spin off games were created and even a board game. Who knew a game where you guess five letter words would be the most popular game of the year?
#4: Taylor Swift
The pop star dominated the headlines this year. Swift won many awards including six American Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, three People’s Choice Awards, and three MTV Video Music Awards. She also released her new album “Midnights” in October that broke multiple records including most streamed album on release day, first 24 hours, and in one week. Swift also announced her “Eras” tour which caused Ticketmaster shut downs and intense competition for tickets. It is safe to say that Taylor is not going away anytime soon.
#5: Queen Elizabeth
One of the most notable events from this year was the death of Queen Elizabeth II. At the age of 96 and after a 70 year-long reign, the longest ruling British monarch died in her beloved Balmoral Castle. Her death brought up so many emotions, both good and bad, but also instilled a feeling of instability as one of the most consistent parts of our lives was lost. Queen Elizabeth II was a true icon and an inspiration to so many.
#6: The Try Guys Become the Tri Guys
Popular YouTube quartet, the Try Guys, got thrown into the spotlight after Ned Fulmer, the token family guy, was caught cheating on his wife with one of his employees. He was then fired from the company and quickly excommunicated by fans. The scandal drew attention all over social media and was even parodied on Saturday Night Live. Now a loveable trio, the Try Guys are entering a new era, full of good vibes only.
#7: Movies
After two years of movies premiering almost exclusively on various streaming platforms, 2022 brought a whole slate of excellent movies in theaters. “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Elvis”, and “Avatar” were not only incredible movies, but also box office record breakers. This year was a great way to reintroduce the classic movie theater experience back into our lives.
#8: World Cup
The FIFA Men’s World Cup returned this November in Qatar and united the whole world for a month. So many people in just our school community were watching that it nearly shut down school Wifi. While it was a short feat for the United States, we got to see so many great matches, a controversial situation that resulted in Christiano Ronaldo being benched, and Lionel Messi’s first World Cup championship. It was so fun to experience this historic World Cup during the holiday season, rather than the usual summer months, as well as a school community.
#9: BeReal
This social media platform blew up over the summer, being called the one “truly real social media”. They send a notification out to all users at a random time during the day and give them two minutes to take a picture and post it. When taking a picture, it captures from both the front and back facing cameras. What makes this app so appealing? It is a fun way to see what your friends are up to with lowered pressure of being perfect or facing unrealistic comparisons. How much longer will this app be popular? I guess we will have to wait and see what 2023 brings.
#10: Prequels
All of our favorite TV show franchises got together and asked each other “how can we keep the stories going but make it new and fresh for the audiences?” Their answer, prequels. “Game of Thrones” brought us “House of Dragon”; “Lord of the Rings” brought us “The Rings of Power”. These producers obviously were not wrong in their decision because they have been extremely popular and brought new and old audiences together to enjoy some new TV. Maybe next year, we will see even more prequels.
Reflecting back on this year and all of the crazy, amazing moments we as a society shared this year brings a lot of excitement for what 2023 has to bring.

As the pandemic hit the entertainment industry, movie theaters were hit especially hard. The global box office lost billions of dollars as viewers streamed content instead of going into movie theaters. Yet, many movies have hit the big screens recently, including Smile (note that Smile is rated R for violence, grisly images, and language). The hit horror movie being exclusively shown in theaters has received a lot of attention. So, is Smile worth making the trek to the movie theater? Maybe.
Smile follows a therapist, Dr. Rose Cotter, after a traumatic encounter with a patient. The experience haunts Rose in a string of terrifying events. She starts to notice a pattern; something is making people who witness suicide also die. The question lies in whether these deaths are caused by psychological or supernatural factors. This plot felt a bit dated to me–the “psychological or supernatural” plot has been played out many times in older horror movies. Also, I thought the movie had excessive gore. However, while I might call Smile dated and gorey, it can be an enjoyable classic for others.
A 10th grader, Alana Zych, said, “I thought the movie was good. It was actually scary because of all of the gore. If people like horror, then I would recommend the movie.”
Overall, Smile is a great chance for horror fans to see a movie on the big screen after a long break from the theaters. But, for those not into horror or gorey scenes, Smile might not be the right fit.

Taylor Swift released her newest album Midnights on October 21st, 2022. It was a highly anticipated album, and many students here at Eastview were looking forward to the release. The album consisted of thirteen songs with another seven released at 3 AM as a surprise. It was her 10th album as well as a pop album which hasn’t been seen by her in a few years. Taylor Swift has been releasing music since 2006, so many Eastview students have grown up listening to her music and it holds a special place in their hearts.
Senior Sam Quady was anticipating the release and said she stayed up to listen to the entire album when it was released at midnight, as well as she woke up at 3 AM to listen to the rest of the songs. Her favorite on the album was “Karma” because of how catchy it is. The album overall was different than many people thought it would be since Taylor’s last few albums have not been as upbeat as this one.
However, not everyone is a fan of the album, and junior Neal Rajvansh said he only listened to two songs. He also said her songs are pretty average with a few outliers such as “Cruel Summer” from her 2019 album Lover. His favorite song on the album was “Lavender Haze”, but he said the album didn’t live up to his expectations.
Although not everyone is a fan of Taylor Swift, her widespread fame means that practically everyone knows who she is. But does her success and popularity affect Eastview? For some people, yes. Many students relate to the songs she writes and follow her life through social media. For others, not so much. They can easily not think about her or any of her songs on a day-to-day basis, especially if they don’t relate to them. Overall, the release of Midnights has impacted the lives of much of the Eastview community, and many students are anticipating her upcoming tour.

This past summer, many new movies debuted only in movie theaters (instead of on streaming which has been popular since the pandemic started). Besides Top Gun and the new Minions movie, another highly anticipated movie came out this past summer and recently was put on HBO Max- Elvis. From the director of the 1996 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet (the one we all watched in 9th grade English class starring young Leonardo DiCaprio), the Great Gatsby adaptation (also starring Leonardo DiCaprio) and Moulin Rouge (did not have Leonardo DiCaprio), Baz Luhrmann continues his style of fast-paced, over the top movies with this Elvis biopic. This style can be polarizing. Personally, I like how it seems like there’s always a million things going on at once, but some people (like my mom) got motion sickness from the fast camera movements and how it never seemed to stay on a shot for more than four seconds.
One interesting aspect of the movie was the perspective it was told from. Rather than being told by Elvis Presley himself, it took the point of view of his manager, played by Tom Hanks. It followed Elvise's rise to fame and the spiral that led to him falling out of popularity until nothing was left. At the end of the day, this movie had a lot of things going for it. Take for example, Austin Butler's performance was amazing and at times I even forgot that I wasn’t watching the real Elvis. The soundtrack was great as well, including some of Presley's greatest hits and new songs created for the movie, including Vegas by Doja Cat.
Overall, Elvis was a very memorable movie that gave me a great experience going back in-person to movie theaters!

Taylor Swift is one of the most influential and successful pop-stars in the world. She’s released a total of nine albums in just fifteen years, appeared in movies, and earned a total of 11 Grammys along with other awards for her work. She’s shown her versatility as an artist, starting in the country genre then branching out to find success in pop and folk-inspired sounds. She’s broken countless records, topped music charts, and smashed expectations in the music industry.
2021 has been no exception for Taylor’s success. Following the success of her two albums Folklore and Evermore in 2020, she has continued to impress the public and her fans. In April of this year, Swift released a re-recording of her second album Fearless to regain the rights and ownership to her work, previously owned by Scooter Braun and Big Machine Records, her old recording label.
On November 12, 2021, Taylor continued with her re-recordings with the release of Red (Taylor’s Version). This new album contained re-recordings of all 16 songs from the original Red, along with new songs “From The Vault” that were not released on the original album.
Fans and the public alike have caused commotion over the re-release of All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version). Swift dropped the full ten minute version of the song and made her directorial debut with a short film, also titled All Too Well, featuring the full song and starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien. This short film has reached almost 50 MILLION views on YouTube as of today. Taylor Swift was able to create a song that was both emotional and engaging for ten whole minutes, a feat that not many current artists can achieve. Red (Taylor’s Version) features collaborations with artists such as Phoebe Bridges on Nothing New (From The Vault), and Ed Sheeran on Run (From The Vault) and Everything Has Changed (Taylor’s Version) along with other significant artists. On November 15, Swift released a video directed by actress Blake Lively for the vault track I Bet You Think About Me Ft. Chris Stapleton.
Though many of the songs sound similar to her original recordings of Red, it’s not difficult to see how much Taylor Swift has grown as a musician.
"This lovely, funny film, animated gorgeously, asks big questions about life."

Pete Docter has given us great movies for the last two decades. From Monsters, Inc., Inside Out, and Up to his most recent movie, Soul. His lessons from the movies are all very important and provide us with a reminder of what really matters in life. Similarly, Soul is a very heart-warming movie. It reminds us of a very important life lesson: appreciate life and accept change. This lesson is often forgotten in the hassle and stressfulness of our lives. Often, we need to remind ourselves to take a step back and take in the fact that we can just live. This movie also has one other very important lesson; you are not required to find a goal to live for. Many people in our lives tell us we need a goal in life. Whether that goal is having a salary of one million dollars per year or opening your own business, being able to enjoy life is enough to fulfill that goal. Now, that does not mean it is not good to have goals. It means you have to find a balance between enjoying life and pushing yourself to your goals.
Soul is about a middle school band teacher named Joe. Joe aspires to be a great jazz musician, and he’s an incredibly good musician too. One day, Joe gets stuck in another dimension. Joe tries to help his friend find her passion in life, and in the process he learns what it means to have a soul.
Soul has received a lot of attention, especially because the main character, Joe, is a black character. In the movie, Joe is accompanied by a skin “colorless” character named 22. Her name is literally 22. Joe was voiced by famous moviestar Jamie Foxx, but 22 is voiced by Tina Fey. People were upset about these choices for voice casting because it led them to believe that a black man cannot survive without the guidance of a white “savior.” After the George Floyd protests, more people have become of ways that the movie industry portrays these smaller, but incredibly important ideas.
Soul may not have been the best Pixar movie ever created by Pete Docter, but it does teach us some pretty valuable lessons that give us a reality-check of our lives.
"Both utterly dazzling and increasingly bewildering."

The films of Christopher Nolan are not exactly known for being easy to follow. Memento, The Prestige and Inception have all confused and delighted audiences with their nonlinear plot structures and intensely cerebral nature. His latest film, Tenet, continues and expands upon this trend, packing one of the most wild and tortuous viewing experiences in recent memory. Tenet is Nolan’s unique, time-twisting take on the classic spy movie, making for a very interesting and fun movie to watch at home while quarantined; indeed, it was initially scheduled to be released early in 2020, but after a number of delays, finally opened to extremely low attendance as covid-wary citizens stayed away from movie theaters. Thus, the movie failed to make up for its high production budget, losing Warner Bros. some $100 million. Thankfully, Tenet has now been released on digital home video, meaning that, if you have been waiting with baited breath to see Nolan’s latest thriller, the time has finally come.
The plot of Tenet (at least as we, the audience, view it) follows an unnamed CIA agent portrayed by John David Washington - son of movie legend Denzel Washington - as he is recruited into a top-secret program called Tenet. He learns that a system of time travel has been invented; well, not time travel exactly, but rather the inversion of the path of time for an individual object or person. He is tasked with tracking down the person who is receiving something being sent back from the future. His search leads him to Andrei Sator, a Russian oligarch and arms dealer played by the renowned Kenneth Branagh. From there, he becomes embroiled in a plot to destroy all of history being carried out by Sator, while also attempting to free Sator's rebellious wife from his grasp. He switches between forward and backward movement through time, with all timelines converging (in classic Nolan fashion) in an epic battle at the end.
This film can certainly not be considered “casual viewing”. It requires intense concentration to stay with the plot, and even then, it may require a second viewing for many like me in order to truly understand it. That being said, if you are able to keep up with the fast-paced plot and the time “inversions”, it is a truly captivating and interesting film. For fans of Nolan’s previous work, such as Inception, it should be a treat. For me personally, even if I could not wrap my head around the intricacies of the time travel system, I still had great appreciation for the cinematography and editing, with many scenes seamlessly combining forward and backward motion. For any aspiring filmmakers out there, it will be very fun to try and piece together Nolan’s techniques for making this work.
In summary, while this film does not contain any poignant social or political commentary, it is still a fun summer blockbuster (well, it would have been, if anyone would have been able to see it in the summer) that gets you thinking and includes some mind-boggling, “how did they do that?” camera work and editing. It certainly gave me something to enjoy and think about while I was cooped up inside my house over the winter. If you’re sitting around at home with nothing else to do, as many of us are at the moment, I highly recommend you give it a try.

As someone who has been in a years long reading slump, this book was exactly what I needed. Unique characters you fall in love with, world building that walks the perfect balance between being overwhelming or lacking, and a plot that takes readers along for the ride with ease- what more can you ask from a fantasy book?
The story begins with Rags, a thief who’s latest heist takes a turn for the worse, ending with his being coerced into working for a royal sorcerer who’s on the hunt for ancient fae relics. Through this chase, the cast grows to include a disgraced noble, a deserter soldier, a prince, a member of the resistance, and even a fae prince. The novel manages to seamlessly wind these six characters’ stories into a seamless tale of adventure, intrigue, and fun.
One thing I love about this book, and books like it, is the multiple point of views (POVs) that it offers. Not only do you get to gain a deeper understanding of each character, but especially as the plot picks up it leaves me more and more involved in the story. Whether it’s a cliffhanger, or just a section I was really enjoying, when the POV switches from one plot line to the next I get really swept up into the story. The transition from character to character makes me eager to return to each plot point and perspective, and hooks me into the story the way a good book should.
My only complaint about this book is the ending (No spoilers though! Don’t worry). While I was extremely satisfied with where it ended off, I am absolutely in need of a sequel. Since this book only came out in November of 2020, and the authors say they only have a couple hundred page draft and no guarantee of their publisher agreeing to make a second book, it could be a while before we return to the world Jones and Bennett have crafted. Despite my desperation for a sequel, this book was absolutely worth every second I spent on it. If you’re a fan of fantasy, or are in need of a fun book to fall into as an escape, this is absolutely the book for you.

If you’re like me, you’re probably looking for the perfect holiday movie to add to your lineup over winter break. Let me recommend Jingle Jangle to you for the perfect family movie this holiday season.
Jingle Jangle follows Jeronicus Jangle, an inventor of toys, and his granddaughter, Journey, as they try to create an epic Christmas invention to keep Jeronicus’s shop in business. While they try to accomplish this, they also need to outsmart Jeronicus’s former apprentice who betrayed him and stole his ideas. Jeronicus Jangle also has to navigate his relationship with his daughter, Jessica, throughout the movie as they were estranged after his wife and Jessica’s mother passed away at the beginning of the movie.
Jingle Jangle has the perfect holiday vibe, filled with exciting dance numbers, colorful scenery, and cheerful songs, though I will admit that the movie can get a bit childish at times. Journey and her grandfather often refer to the “square root of possible”, but I think that if you give into your inner child, it can be truly enjoyable.
One of my favorite parts of the movie was the incredibly diverse cast. Big name stars such as Forest Whitaker and Keegan-Michael Key played some of the main roles, but new talent, like Madalen Mills who played Journey, were also part of the cast. The best part was that nearly each character was played by an actor of color and they were all very talented when it came to acting, singing, and dancing.
The songs were also extremely catchy. My favorites were “Make It Work Again” sung by Forest Whitaker (who plays Jeronicus Jangle) and Anika Noni Rose (who plays his daughter, Jessica Jangle), as well as “Magic Man G,” sung by Keegan-Michael Key (who plays Jeronicus Jangle’s former apprentice, Gustafson).
As a whole, the movie was really fun to watch. The costumes and scenery definitely added to the winter/holiday mood and the added aspect of “inventions” made it more interesting. I was inspired to go out and invent something of my own after watching it.
If you can get past the slightly cliché aspects of Jingle Jangle, it can be a great holiday movie. It’s perfect to watch while curled up in front of the fireplace with a mug of hot chocolate, or something to set up on your laptop while baking a batch of Christmas cookies. I’d definitely recommend it as a way to pass time and jam out to some pretty good music.

Kpop sensation BTS is known for having an excellent story in every piece of music they release, and their newest album “BE” was no exception.
Released on November 20th, the album includes 6 new songs, Dynamite, which was released as a single in August, and a skit. As a fan for over three years now, one of the first things I make sure to do when they release a new album is to listen to all the songs in order, and do nothing else during that time. Every album tells a story, and BE was especially relevant as it goes through BTS’ own journey during the pandemic. As people who live to perform for their fans, having to cancel their world tour and not see their fans for months has been terrible. However, through that time, they were able to create this album.
The lead single, Life Goes On, immediately grabs your attention as it starts with the words “I Remember.” The music video, directed by one of BTS’ own members Jeon Jungkook, depicts everyone in very relaxed and homy outfits. It is clear that they are spending most of their time at home and with each other. At the end of the video however, the shot changes to a scene of the 7 members singing in an empty stadium. The song creates a clear picture of what we all have been going through since the pandemic fully hit us in a month. Stuck for months on end at home, not able to do what love, unable to see the people close to us are all realities for us right now. However, BTS makes it clear that “life goes on,” and eventually hope will come up again. All we need to do is stick together and continue on.
The next song, Fly to My Room, is definitely a change from the lead single as the beat is much more upbeat. However, the message of being stuck continues, as the meaning of the song describes how being in our room makes us feel comfortable, which can be both negative and positive. The four members in this song, V, Jimin, Suga, and J-Hope, work well together to describe how difficult it is to be staying at home and quaratning for weeks on end, only going outside for the most necessary tasks.
The album then continues with Blue and Grey, arguably their saddest and most reflective song in the album. Written by BTS member V, the song describes the helplessness and loneliness that comes with living during a pandemic. The line “I just want to be happier,” which left many fans crying, reflects the difficulties everyone is going through and how difficult it is to find happiness in a world where there is no clear ending to the pandemic. Even world famous people like BTS are going through the same experiences as us, as everyone is struggling with the reality we face every day, and have been facing for months.
Next up, the Skit! Skits are something that BTS have not included in an album for several years, and are usually recordings of them talking about something or after a large event. For this particular skit, listeners get to hear BTS after they debuted at number one on the Billboard 100 chart for the first time. This is an extremely difficult feat to accomplish, and is considered almost impossible for a non-Western artist. BTS were the first Asian act to do so in over 20 years, and we're definitely overjoyed about it occurring. The almost 3-minute long skit is filled with the mmers celebrating, joking around with each other about how they were asleep when it came, and overall just discussing their feelings. In the album as a whole, this is definitely a turning point.
The next song, Telepathy, is a cheerful song filled with retro vibes. The 7 members sing about not being able to connect with their fans during the pandemic. However, unlike the previous songs that had a more reflective and sad feeling, this one is filled with hope and love towards their fans. BTS’ fans, known as the ARMY, include over 150 million people from all over the world, and BTS constantly talk about how much they love and are grateful towards their fans. The lines of the chorus, which are “Every time during the same day I feel the happiest when I meet you Every time, even in a different everyday life You're the most special person to me,” make it extremely clear that BTS is taking a more positive outlook on life now. While they are struggling, they are also looking forward to seeing their fans in the future and taking this chance to connect with their fans.
The next song, which is my favorite as of now, is titled Dis-ease. Not only does it reference the coronavirus in its title, but it also describes being uncomfortable, which is the opposite of ‘ease.’ The meaning of the song describes how connected BTS feels to their work, and how the music they create has become an integral part of them, something no one can take away from them. The song is filled with old style hip hop beats, which fans will recognize from some of BTS’ older music. The song is essentially talking about how BTS will stay determined and forge on no matter what.
Second to last, is Stay. With its EDM beat, this song is extremely catchy. Vocalists Jungkook and Jin are accompanied by Rapper RM to create this amazing song that essentially describes BTS’ relationship with their fans. Despite the fact that they have not been able to perform in front of people for months, they can still feel that connection with their fans. No matter, they know that ARMY will “always stay.”
The album ends with the extremely cheerful and well-known Dynamite, which is essentially a party in a song. Trust me, it is impossible to feel down while listening to that song.
BTS’ newest masterpiece, BE, is clearly extremely necessary and relevant during these times. It teaches us all how it is okay to feel depressed and down and reminiscent, but that we also need to have hope for the future and should never give up. BE definitely gets a 10/10 in my book! BTS has done it again!

Netflix and binge-watching are terms that often go hand in hand, and this has certainly been true for me whilst watching Netflix’s High Seas, otherwise known as Alta Mar in its original Spanish version (it has voiceover and captions in English as well as other languages, so it is accessible for anyone!). The series is a thrilling and quick paced mystery which follows two sisters who have boarded a luxurious ship to make the journey from Spain to Brazil in the 1940’s to start a new life. During their voyage, a string of murders and deaths reveal buried secrets and hidden motives among the crew and passengers.
The series stands out for its strong leads, interesting plotlines, dynamic characters, and skillful acting. Every character has depth, motives, and personality, even if they play a minor role in the grand scheme of things. The cast does a fantastic job of playing their characters, from their body language to their intonation. The two sisters, Eva and Carolina, have complex relationships not only with their family on the ship, but with their fellow passengers and the crew. Whether it be tension because of mistrust or because of romance, there is always a lot going on between the various characters. The show, while it is a drama and mystery, also has its fair share of humorous moments. Jokes and humor are sprinkled throughout, offering a nice change of pace.
While there is always a lot going on in High Seas, the viewer never feels rushed or overwhelmed, only immersed in the show itself. I started this series in the hopes that it would boost my Spanish comprehension, but I found so much more. This show is interesting, witty, and filled with glamor; it is definitely worth a watch!

Trying to find peace with whatever is going on in the world is difficult. Add that stress with completing schoolwork and studying, makes life impossible to bear. What have I been doing to escape this stress for a little while? Listening to all sorts of music, I have listened to hours of Miranda Lambert, Eminem, Conan Gray, Broadway Musicals, and Frank Sinatra. These artists have been the backbone of my distance learning experience, and I often find myself taking a dance break in my room. Recently I have been more invested in soul and pop-rock type of music to fuel my motivation. An artist that I came across is Sara Bareilles, you may know her from her works on Broadway Musical Waitress and TV Show Little Voice. Her music is poetic and rhythmic, creating songs that are catchy and meaningful. She has eight Grammy Nominations and a recent Grammy win for her song Saint Honesty in her 2019 album Amidst the Chaos. The album even though written a year ago, is a storybook that can be related to today.
Like any album, we all have our favorites to listen to on repeat. I can’t stop listening to Armor, Fire, If I can’t Have You, Poetry By Dead Men, and A Safe Place to Land featuring John Legend. Armor and Fire have really strong messages about facing challenges and not settling for less. If you’re looking for a feminist bop, Armor is your gal with lyrics like “only the little boys tell you they’re a big man” and “how the hell did Eve end up with all the damn blame?”. If I were to describe what this album sounds like, it would be a mix of Taylor Swifts Folklore with Beyonce’s Run the World. The album has its fair share of break up ballads that are both about romantic relationships and breaking up with our past beliefs. Personal growth is embodied in each of the songs, showing how important it is to go through it. The well-written lyrics are paired with soul and RnB type of beats that allure the listeners to listen deeper. Online, the ratings are 8/10 or 4.7/5 which I think is fair. You can find the songs on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music. Happy Listening!

2020 marks 75 years after the end of World War Two, an anniversary that serves to remind our generation of the cruelty and suffering in the past that we must avoid repeating. The events of World War Two and the Holocaust get more and more condensed in our history books, but the lessons of this tragic time in history need to continue to be heard. The preservation of people's stories of heartbreak and bravery has become the responsibility of authors. Great works of fiction and nonfiction alike such as the Book Thief and Night allow readers to continue to reflect and learn from the tragedies of the past. One of the most popular historical fiction books about this time period is The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah. The book tells the story of two sisters in Nazi occupied France, Vianne and Isabelle. Alternating between the sisters points of view, the book captures two distinct ways women made a difference during World War Two. Vianne is a mother and school teacher who finds ways to support the Allied powers right under the nose of a Nazi living in her home. Isabelle is a reckless young woman who finds herself deep within the resistance forces in France and continually risks her life to provide information and safety to those who oppose the Nazi regime. The Nightingale brings these two characters to life and effectively addresses World War Two in a unique yet accurate way.
The Nightingale is unique in the way it focuses on two women and their personal journeys of empowerment, allowing readers to see a side of history that is often underdeveloped. Unlike other books about women in this time period, the focus is not on the love stories of Vianne and Isabelle, instead the focus is on their individual accomplishments. The suspense in the story is built around the risks that these women take. Although Vianne is waiting for news of the return of her husband throughout the book, she doesn’t just sit around and wait, the plot points that are the most impactful in her storyline is when she takes control of the situation. Her story throughout the book is written with the focus on her own personal journey of learning that some risks are with taking. Isabelle's story starts off in a very typical fashion, she meets a man and falls in love, but the book quickly pivots away from that cliche storyline. Isabelle cares more about the War effort than she cares about building upon a romantic relationship. Her story morphs into one of the most empowering stories of the book, as she learns to put others first and the importance of restraint. The Nightingale is beautifully written and it works to display a unique angle of the classic historical fiction novel, portraying strong female leads, and ultimately choosing to promote personal growth over romance.
One of the challenges of writing books about this time period is that authors have to be careful not to overly romanticize the war. The Nightingale doesn’t shy away from describing the death and destruction of the war, but it also maintains an uplifting and inspiring story that keeps readers engaged even through the tragedies described throughout the pages. Vianne lives in a town that is fully occupied by the Nazis, she faces the death of her colleagues and friends. She places a ribbon on a tree outside her home for every friend that has died. The use of the tree in the book allows for readers to be reminded of the death and destruction of the war, while also giving them hope that Vianne will continue to fight to live in honor of her friends, keeping the suspense alive. Isabelle constantly has the threat of death and imprisonment hanging over her head. As a resistance operative she would be sent to a concentration camp if caught. Every chapter from her point of view, there is a reference to this looming consequence. When she commits a heroic act, readers are reminded that it's not glamorous, it's risky, and she never truly got to be rewarded for the work she did. The book allows readers to hold onto hope yet simultaneously reflect on the utter destruction that World War Two brought.
The Nightingale is a work of fiction. It's not true in terms of names and dates, but it's very true in terms of the lessons it teaches. Books are created to tell stories, not just for entertainment, but for future generations to remember the past. The Nightingale is a novel that has made waves all around the nation topping the best selling lists for three consecutive years. As we continue to see World War Two slip further into history, stories like this help keep the lessons alive.

If I’m being honest, I had never heard of Missing Link before it was recommended to me. And I’m not surprised. Missing Link, produced by the same studio that created Kubo and the Two Strings, was a box office flop, costing a $100 million to produce, and only taking in $26.2 million at the box office. But when I watched it, I regretted not seeing it sooner.
Missing Link follows adventurer Sir Lionel Frost, voiced by Hugh Jackman, as he attempts to bring the last living sasquatch, who names himself Susan, voiced by Zach Galifianikis, to his close relatives the yeti, who live in a mythical place named Shangri La in Asia. The plot itself is very heartwarming, and the animation is incredible. The movie is filmed in stop-motion, but every detail is so exquisite and the movement so fluid that you hardly notice.
Thematically, the movie touches on some heady ideas like imperialism while at its core being about friendship. As Sir Lionel Frost attempts to deliver Susan across the ocean from Oregon to Shangri La, the head of an old-fashioned men’s club Sir Piggot-Dunceby attempts to kill the ‘savage’ in order to keep his prestige as the most famed explorer in the world. Although Frost starts out just wanting to help Susan, the two form an unlikely bond through their experiences, and quickly become teammates.
Above all, the movie is hilarious. Susan provides lots of comic relief throughout the film, and will quickly become your favorite character. He is so loveable, ridiculously stupid, and witty. To this, some credit goes to the animators, as there is just as much physical humor as verbal. The first time you see Susan, he is running in a dopey, uncoordinated jog- the exact opposite of scary sasquatch.
I would 100% recommend Missing Link to anybody who is bored during this time of social distancing. It is relatively cheap to rent, and is a nice, heart-warming story for the whole family. So pop it on, sit down with your loved ones, and enjoy.

One of the most well-known monsters in our modern era is Frankenstein. Or is it? Before reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley in my 11th Grade AP English Language class, I thought the name resembled the monster that was spawned to life from electricity. However, that is not the case. The title of this novel refers to the creator of this monster, Victor Frankenstein. Even after many decades, the book still stands out as a fundamental Romantic/Gothic classic.
Although my class along with many other classes nationwide are required to read this novel, it still stands out as one of the most interesting narratives in the classroom. Frankenstein revolves around the life of Victor Frankenstein from childhood to adulthood as he chases his life’s purpose. Fascinated by his earliest books, Victor decides to further his education through scientific research. This leads him to search for the answer to recreate life as a whole. After several months of experience and inquiry, Victor finally manages to find the solution.
Throughout the novel, Mary Shelley remains unclear about the specific process that Victor utilizes in order to create this creature. As a result, this leads to an oblivious plot that focuses on Victor’s relationships at the core. While Victor takes a risk in pursuing the creation of “life,” he doesn’t take the right precautions for what would happen next. Thus, many of his actions lead to unintended consequences.
As menacing as the monster may sound, Shelley carefully crafts her writing to present multiple extremes for both Victor and his creation. The structure of the novel is set around Victor’s re-telling of his life story before and after reaching the climactic encounter between both characters.
This novel stands out as one of my favorite novels that I’ve had to read in high schoo, and iWith only 170 pages for the entirety of the novel, Frankenstein is a fast-paced Gothic thriller that challenges its readers to find who they are really sympathetic towards–the monster or Frankenstein? Read Frankenstein by Mary Shelly to find out!

I have definitely done my fair share of binge-watching this quarantine. Although there are so many streaming services, like Disney+ or Netflix or CBS All Access, it can be hard to find new shows to watch. I often have trouble finding shows that I’m genuinely interested in, so when I tell you that I loved a show, I really mean it. I’m currently working my way through Peaky Blinders, which is available on Netflix, and I would absolutely recommend that you check it out.
Peaky Blinders takes place in 1919, just after the end of World War I. It follows the lives of the Shelby family in Birmingham, England. The Shelby’s are the heads of an infamous gang called the Peaky Blinders, known for the razors sewn into the brims of their flat caps. The first season focuses on the family adjusting to life after the war with Tommy Shelby, an ambitious businessman, taking over the gang’s operations. Meanwhile, Detective Campbell arrives in Birmingham to track down a missing crate of guns which paves the way for the central plot of the first season.
Peaky Blinders is the perfect mix of everything. There’s a bit of romance, plenty of danger, a lot of scheming and logic, as well as a bit of history. As someone who isn’t normally a fan of historical dramas, I was surprisingly pleased by this show. The actors, costumes, and settings are incredible, and the plot is engaging. One of my favorite things about the show is that each season is only six episodes long. Each episode is almost an hour, but the shorter seasons and longer episodes mean that you can become more invested in the characters without feeling like that season’s plot is being dragged out. The show builds slowly. The first episode doesn't seem all that exciting, but as you continue to watch, you begin to understand the thought that the Shelby’s must put into each of their decisions and how each choice plays out in the long run.
I’ll admit that this show may not be for everyone. It is not a feel-good sitcom like Friends or a teen drama like Gossip Girl - it’s something that’s a little more mature and requires some thought. The slower progression and deeper understanding needed, however, pay off in the end. Peaky Blinders has won multiple awards, so I’d urge you to at least watch the trailer. The show does have lots of violence and some sexual content, so watch it at your own discretion.

Last year, when To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (TATBILB) came out on Netflix, I was ecstatic. I absolutely loved the movie and all of the characters in it. As someone who loves rom-coms, it was definitely a movie I was willing to watch over and over again. So, when Netflix announced last year that a sequel was going to be released, like many TATBILB fans, I got excited all over again. However, when I finally watched the movie a few weeks ago, I was extremely disappointed, to say the least. There were many elements of the movie that I felt failed to meet the standards set by the previous movie.
First, the storyline. In the first movie, there at least seemed to be some sort of structure throughout the movie, as we saw Lara Jean discover different parts of herself while having a fake relationship. In the sequel, however, there seemed to be no storyline. I felt that the entire movie was going nowhere and I had no reason to be excited.
Second, the main character. I was a huge fan of the main character, Lara Jean, in the first movie. She was extremely driven but also relatable, and I am sure many teens also felt that she was ‘one of them’. With the sequel, I felt constantly frustrated by the actions she made. She kept on ignoring her problems and trying to cover them up, without thinking them through. I had hoped she would have matured from the first movie, but she failed to do so and continued to have communication problems with her boyfriend. While I understand it is unrealistic to believe that she would completely change her entire personality in two movies, I had hoped for a mature approach to her relationships. She constantly seems to be confused and ends up stuck in a love triangle even though she has a boyfriend.
For all the fans of TATBILB, I hope you had a better experience with this movie than I did. However, if you have not seen the first movie, I would definitely encourage you to do so! Hopefully, you will then like the second one a lot more than I did.

As we continue to spend time in quarantine, it can be difficult to find new things to do. One way that we can decompress and take time away from the screens that we’re on all day is by reading something enjoyable outside of what we have to read for school. My recommendation is Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.
Ender’s Game chronicles the life of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin in Battle School. The story takes place far in the future, where an alien race called the “Buggers” have declared war on the Earth. To fight the Bugger War, children are recruited to join Battle School where they will train to fly spaceships and command armies in battles with the Buggers. Ender is a special case. He is the third child in his family during a time where having more than two children is discouraged. Because of this, Ender has always been ridiculed and isolated. As Ender makes his way through Battle School, we get to watch him grow as a leader, make new friends, and forge a new path in the Bugger Wars.
This book is definitely one of my favorites. It’s a little less than 300 pages, but it’s a quick read because the suspense and excitement reel you in from the very beginning. The world that Card has created is new and exciting. It’s different from many other science fiction books because of its unique take on what normalcy is. The vivid images of Battle School hovering high above Earth’s atmosphere, as well as it’s unique perspective on children as leaders is unlike any other book that I’ve read. Card does a great job of integrating the Buggers’ story into Ender’s. Many authors create villains and write action-packed books, but Card helps you to understand all sides of the story. The book provides an opportunity to look into the lives of the “villains”, and their motives, which is something that I found refreshing.
One of the best things about the book is that it’s a great read for anyone. The writing isn’t overly complex, so even younger readers can enjoy it. It’s also written well, so if you do like analyzing stories, you can read in-between the lines. The plot is engaging and sensible, the characters are relatable, as many of them are just a little younger than us, and the lessons learned are tremendous. Ender’s Game is the first book in a much larger series. The Ender Series consists of five other books, but there are many other spin-offs that look into the time before Ender and the lives of the Buggers. Ender’s Game was also turned into a movie starring Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, and Harrison Ford, so after reading, you have a movie to watch too! It’s one of the few movies that I actually enjoy as much as, if not more than the book.
Winning multiple book awards, Ender’s Game is a thrilling story about the future. Perhaps it sounds far-fetched, but the best thing about books is that they can transport you from your room to another world in just a few seconds. In a time of quarantine, we all need a bit of change in our lives. Maybe science fiction isn’t for you, but I urge that you find something that you love because there’s a book out there for everyone. If you don’t have any books at home that you want to read, or want a new selection, CloudLibrary is a great app that is available on all of our iPads. You can use your library card to check out digital copies of books or if you don’t have a library card, reach out to teachers to see if you can use your school account to check out books.

Suspenseful. Eye-opening. Eerie. Netflix’s Mindhunter is a hidden gem in the collection of TV shows and movies offered by the streaming platform. Set in the 1970s, Mindhunter follows the origins of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit (BSU), the unit accredited with the discovery of serial killer psychology. Between jarring, yet suspenseful, interviews with some of the most infamous murders in the late 1900s, Agent Holden Ford and his partner Bill Tench develop psychological profiles of deranged killers, ultimately coining the term “serial killer”. It becomes their job to think like serial killers in order to catch serial killers.
Mindhunter is not for the faint of heart; not only does the show include dark, and often graphic, depictions of death and struggle, but the real life events and people that the show is based on gives the story an added level of intensity. Yet, for those looking to find a story that is binge-worthy and will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, Mindhunter offers complex characters, gut-wrenching plot-twists, and a storyline that makes you question what you thought you knew about the FBI, and serial killers.
While the show may be a psychological thriller, Mindhunter is also undoubtedly fast paced. Sinister plots unfurl, character dramas spin out of control, and puzzling mysteries and problems present themselves at unexpected moments, making Mindhunter a hit even amongst those who prefer high action films.
If you dislike dark twists and haunting plotlines, you can undoubtedly fall in love with the mesmerizing character depictions displayed in Mindhunter. In fact, one of the most remarkable qualities of the show is its top notch acting. Johnathen Groff’s depiction of Holden Ford won him the 2018 Satellite Award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama. Not to mention Holt McCallany’s impeccable display of the gruff Bill Tench and Anna Trov’s superb, stone-cold, personality as Dr. Wendy Carr, both roles that make the show’s story seem extremely realistic.
Mindhunter is beautifully filmed and expertly directed. David Fincher truly outdoes himself with his meticulous attention to detail. If you are looking for a new show, Mindhunter is seriously worth watching an episode. The show starts slow, but is well worth the wait, as it takes a spin on our infatuation with serial killers while maintaining a well balanced and perfectly placed storyline.

If you haven’t heard about Parasite, you may be living under a rock. The ground-breaking South Korean film won four Oscars for Best Picture -the first movie not in English to do so-, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, won the highest honor at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, and holds an astounding 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. When I heard that Parasite was the first non-English movie to ever win Best Picture at the Oscars, I had my doubts. I thought that maybe this was a political move to celebrate diversity just five years after the Oscars were criticized for honoring primarily white artists. But then I watched the movie.
Director Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite is a stunning drama-thriller about an impoverished family in South Korea that fakes their way into employment by a very wealthy family- posing as an art therapist, an english tutor, a housekeeper, and a driver. But about half way through, the movie takes a crazy plot twist, and takes into a completely different tone.
The movie is admittedly a bit of a slow burn for the first quarter, but once you get into the plot the movie is totally worth it. I have seen the movie four times now, and everytime I am left completely moved at the end. If you have seen Jordan Peele’s Get Out or Us, you will definitely enjoy Parasite. Both Peele’s movies and Parasite are told with rich metaphors that leave you with thought-provoking social commentary, while still very entertaining. Whereas Peele’s movies focus on life for African Americans, Bong Joon-ho’s movie focuses on class disparities, with subtle touches on climate change, cultural appropriation, and late-stage capitalism.
Notably, the movie is rated R for language, violence, and some sexual content. Click here for more information on the specifics. However, for audiences mature enough to handle these moments, the movie pulls together in a story that is so expertly-crafted, moving, and prevalent in today’s society, that it is no surprise it was Best Picture at the Oscars.
With Covid-19 forcing many of us to stay at home, Parasite will prove an interesting parallel as to forced isolation- albeit for a different reason. And amongst some evidence of wealthy individuals having a leg-up in the fight against Coronavirus, Parasite is further evidence that in our world today, the wealthy have it easier.

As we look for ways to fill our day technology has become an increasingly imperative resource. Our phones are becoming a form of escapism, a way to entertain ourselves with something pleasant and mindless. Unfortunately the more time we spend online the bigger digital footprint we create and if we aren’t careful what we say now can have an immeasurable impact on our future. The book The Hive by Barry Lyga and Morgan Baden is a thrilling novel that combines a setting and emotions that we experience today, with technology of the future. It spreads a message of how when used correctly social media is a brilliant tool, but when used wrongly it can bring chaos and discrimination. The book follows the story of Cassie Mckinney, a high school senior who has recently lost her father. Looking for a way to push away her emotions, she becomes obsessed with The Hive. The Hive is a form of mob rule that has become part of the criminal justice system in the United States. Anything people say online- through a platform much like our twitter- is liked or condemned but other users. If you say something that people condemn, then you face The Hive. A mob of citizens will track you down and subject you to anything from public embarrassment to death. Cassie joins one of these Hive mobs at her school and quickly realizes that at a lower level The Hive isn’t a tool for disruption and good, but a publicized way of bullying. It’s not until after she makes a controversial comment on her own social media that she realizes just how dangerous The Hive really can be. Struggling to deal with her home life and not knowing who she can trust, Cassie has to learn to survive when the Hive turns on her.
The authors’ focus on the harms of social media is crystal clear in the book. By having a main character that readers feel sorry for and attached to suffer from dangers of social media the message is effectively made. Instead of trying to make Cassie the hero that goes and fixes everything the authors make her the victim. This allows readers to envision themselves in Cassie's shoes, and see how their actions that they find innocent, could actually have detrimental consequences. Because The Hive itself isn’t a real problem in our society, the author still maintains that facade of science fiction. Readers aren’t scared of The Hive coming for them, yet they also understand how their own life has numerous parallels to the fictional world that Cassie lives in. Overall if you want to read a book that is a wakeup call for how we all use social media, The Hive fits that criteria.
One of the other focuses of the book is on the emotional journey Cassie goes on when dealing with the loss of her father. Cassie loses a part of herself when her dad dies, but she is able to slowly regain her true personality and interests back. Throughout the book Cassie struggles to connect with her mother, and this is a driving force behind her actions early on in the book. By not making the main plot about grief and loss, but instead sprinkling it in, the authors effectively enhance the depth of the book. Readers are not just experiencing a cautionary tale about social media, they are reading a coming of age story that encompasses both the physical and mental challenges of being a teen in a world similar to our own. While there are some other relationships that go seemingly underdeveloped in the book, the bond formed between Cassie and her mother is a storyline that elevates the book, and helps it appeal to a larger audience.
If you are seeking a book that provides a meaningful solution to the social media problem, this is not the book for you. While there is closure- a novel has to have an ending- its not a realistic solution to end all social media bullying and discrimination. This may take away from the hard core truthes that the authors are trying to get across, but it also represents a more realistic future for readers. There is no perfect solution in real life, and the book's solution may seem aggressively fictional, yet there is still truth in the message. For readers looking to find a solution this book provides other hints as to how a realistic solution might come about, working with friends, family and society to make change.
If I were to rate this book I'd give it 4 stars out of 5. It has a plot that’s not overly complicated but still deep and impactful, and it gets its central message across. It does however have flaws when it comes to character development and providing actual solvency for the issue it addresses. Overall one can only ask for so much out of a fiction novel and I think it's at least worth a read, especially if it gets you off your phone for a moment.

One of the most popular TV shows that I, among many others, have binge-watched is YOU on Netflix. YOU is a psychological thriller starring Gossip Girl star Penn Badgley, Elizabeth Liall, and Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell. The trailer of the show begins with Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) who falls in love at first sight with Beck (Elizabeth Liall) as she enters the bookstore that he is working at. Suddenly, the trailer shifts into several scenes in which Joe is found stalking the stranger for a long period of time, before getting to know her and officially going out on dates. After watching the trailer, like many viewers, I had many mixed opinions about what the show would entail. In my mind, I envisioned Joe through a simple narrative: a stalker, creep, and sociopath. Despite this disturbing profile, I was intrigued to watch.
4 days later, and I had finished the two seasons of YOU on Netflix. However, the major twist was that I actually kind of empathized with Joe Goldberg: the man with many disturbing qualities. Surprisingly, I’m not the only one! A large number of viewers have started to take their view of Joe in a more extreme manner. Many online fan accounts are dedicated to romanticizing Joe’s character while simply dismissing his many negative qualities as a lovesick and obsessed sociopath. A large part of this reality is Penn Badgley’s tremendous performance as a sneaky villain.
Creators Greg Berlanti and Sara Gamble, who are best known for their efforts of bringing the Arrow-verse and Supernatural to the CW, do a marvelous job of bringing out society’s current dilemma: a loss of privacy. As more and more people have their entire “lifestyles” outlined on all of their social media networks, it becomes easier for more “Joe Goldberg’s” to take advantage of this reality and cause great harm. Actress Shay Mitchell shared in an interview with Build that her biggest takeaway from YOU was the fact that “[you] are never who you appear to be on social media. So never trust it completely!”
Through this riveting, fast-paced thriller, find out what Joe will do to find “true” love. Unfortunately, over the course of the two seasons, there may be another word to add to his profile: a killer.

In any normal year, Hollywood’s awards season would start in early January, with the first major ceremony taking place: the Golden Globe Awards. Just as it has impacted every other area of society, the covid-19 pandemic has indeed affected these awards shows as well. Last year, we were just lucky enough to have made it through the end of the season before restrictions came into full force; this year, things will not be quite as convenient. For one thing, the entire season has been moved back by quite a bit. The Globes have been pushed back to February 28, while the Oscars, the traditional end of the awards season, will not happen until late April. On top of this, the ceremonies themselves will look a little different; the Golden Globes will be held in two locations in New York and Beverly Hills simultaneously, limiting how far attendees need to travel. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, no strangers to the job, will be hosting the event from the Rainbow Room in New York and the Beverly Hilton Hotel, respectively. Despite the drastic changes to the way the awards are presented, the categories will remain mostly the same. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the great films, TV shows and performances that have been nominated this year.
Mank, a biopic about the late screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz starring Gary Oldman, and The Crown, a Netflix series about Queen Elizabeth II, have the most nominations with six apiece, in both cases including the top award available to them. Mank’s competition in the Best Motion Picture - Drama category includes The Father, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Notably, Hamilton, a filmed version of the wildly popular Broadway musical, is nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. On the television side of things, The Crown will have to go up against Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Ozark, and Ratched for the title of Best Television Series - Drama. Netflix is responsible for a whopping three out of the five nominees, and the total produced by streaming services is notched up to four by The Mandalorian, which aired on Disney+. Streaming services are also behind four out of the five nominees for the Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy category, although the odd man out, Schitt’s Creek, is the favorite to win.
One of the most interesting categories to watch will be Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama, in which Oldman is nominated for his portrayal of Mankiewicz. However, most of the intrigue comes from the fact that the late Chadwick Boseman, known for playing the title role in Black Panther, is nominated for the film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. If he wins, he will be the first person to win this prestigious award posthumously. In the film, he stars alongside Viola Davis, who is also nominated for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama category.
One curiosity is the fact that two people have a better chance at winning in their category than any other nominees: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, best known for their work with the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. They are nominated in the Best Original Score category - twice. They collaborated to score Mank and Soul, a Pixar animated film that is also nominated for Best Animated Feature Film. Since both of these movies ended up being nominated, Reznor and Ross are twice as likely to win as their competitors in the category.
Regardless of who wins in these categories, the ceremony should be fun and exciting to watch, and it should hopefully provide a pleasant distraction from the state of the world today - just like a good movie or TV show would.

There are many different things that run through people’s heads when you say the word ‘anime’: some may think of extremely popular action animes, such as Naruto Shippuden or Dragon Ball Z, while others may think of cute girls with pink cat ears speaking in voices so high they’ll shatter your eardrums. Likewise, there are many different things that run through people’s heads when you say ‘anime fan’: many people think of five-hundred-pound guys covered in Dorito dust sitting in their mother’s basement lamenting over the fictionality of their waifus, while others may imagine teenage girls in full cosplay at a convention, screaming the lyrics to their favorite anime opening theme song in butchered Japanese.
Well, none of those things are completely wrong. But none of those things are also completely right either. But first, let’s get into what anime is. Anime, defined as animated shows originating from Japan, as a genre is extremely varied. And when I say extremely varied, I mean extremely varied. There is no exact number for how many anime exist in the world, but estimates range from 10,000-30,000 total shows, with the number increasing every year. Within that number, anime splits into even more categories: romance, horror, comedy, sports...basically, whatever floats your boat, there’s most likely an anime for it. In addition, anime ratings range from being suitable for babies to being R-rated. So no, anime is not just for little kids, as many people believe.
Now, as I stated earlier, many people will stereotype anime fans as smelly, lonely, introverts who lose themselves in fictional worlds and buy twenty trillion body pillows. This could not be further from the truth. Anime fans come in all shapes and sizes, ages, races, and genders. In fact, there are many celebrities who like anime! Ariana Grande and Keanu Reeves are just a couple that comes to mind, but there are no doubt millions of anime fans across the world.
Finally, one gigantic barrier that many people experience when watching anime is the fact that it’s in another language. Understandably, a lot of prospective fans are turned off by the subtitles and find it hard to read and watch at the same time. However, this problem is easily remedied with the English dubs that exist for virtually every single anime, so you can still enjoy the show without having to multitask.
Alright, now that I’ve addressed the stereotypes behind anime, let’s get into some recommendations! A lot of people want to get into anime, but don’t know where to start or watch it. Fear not, I’ve compiled a list of great starter animes for lovers of any genre.
Romance
Ouran High School Host Club - 2006 - dir. Takuya Igarashi - TV show - available in sub/dub - PG-13
Plot Synopsis: Ouran High School Host Club revolves around the hijinks and adventures of Haruhi Fujioka, an honor student transferring into the prestigious Ouran Academy, a high school for the children of Japan’s richest families. Looking for a quiet place to study, she stumbles upon the Ouran Host Club, a club of six male students that entertain female guests with their unique personalities. Due to her gender-ambiguous appearance, the hosts mistake her for a boy. Unfortunately, she accidentally breaks a vase worth a lot of money and must become a member of the host club to pay it off.
Weeb Thoughts: This is a very popular anime, which makes a lot of sense considering how funny and heartwarming it is. This show is more of a romantic comedy, and I’m absolutely recommending it to everyone. It really is extremely funny and a great, lighthearted starter anime. This anime is also one of the few that I would recommend the dub to watch.
Where to watch: you can watch this show on Netflix, Hulu, or Crunchyroll(an anime streaming service)

Thriller
Death Note - 2006-2007 - dir. Tetsurou Araki - TV show - available in sub/dub - PG-13
Plot Synopsis: Death Note revolves around Light Yagami, a brilliant but bored high-school student who happens upon a Death Note, a notebook that kills whoever’s name is written down. Light quickly concocts a plan to kill criminals around the world and eventually, to become the god of the “new world” he plans to create with the help of the death god who dropped the notebook, Ryuk. Unfortunately, a brilliant detective by the name of L is recruited to stop him, resulting in a game of cat-and-mouse that spans years.
Weeb Thoughts: This is another extremely popular anime, perfect for anyone who loves a good thriller. The story twists and turns to span over the course of years, so you really get to see the characters and how they change. It raises a lot of philosophical thought as well. The dub is also pretty good, so you should give it a watch!
Where to watch: Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll!

Sports
Haikyuu!! - 2014-present - dir. Susumu Mitsunaka - TV show - available in sub/dub - PG
Plot Synopsis: Shouyou Hinata loves volleyball and believes that he can be the next “Tiny Giant”, a legendary volleyball player who shares his short stature. To achieve this, he attends Karasuno High School(the same school once attended by the Tiny Giant) and joins the volleyball team. There, he meets a group of new friends, including Tobio Kageyama, his volleyball rival from middle school. The story then chronicles Karasuno’s journey to regain their former glory as a powerhouse volleyball school.
Weeb Thoughts: Honestly, this is one of my favorites. I haven’t finished it yet, but Haikyuu!! has it all: humor, heartwarming moments, and an underdog team you just can’t help but root for. There are also many other teams you can root for with extremely interesting character motivations. In addition, the show also explores topics like perseverance, talent vs hard work, and found family.
Where to watch: Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll

Action/Drama
Banana Fish - 2018 - dir. Hiroko Utsumi - TV show - available in sub - R

Weeb Thoughts: I actually haven’t watched this one, but it’s definitely on my list. I’ve heard it’s extremely sad, but also action-filled and humorous at certain parts as well. I’d also like a warning, this show does deal with some mature topics(hence the R rating), so please watch at your own discretion.
