Each puzzle in this book has its own fun theme from frogs to spaghetti to firefighters to stargazing. These engaging topics are brought to life on every page by the brilliant artwork of illustrator Jim Steck.

Each puzzle is different, and will ask your child to give their answer in a variety of different ways, such as drawing a line to the correct answer, colouring the correct answer, circling an answer or writing a number. All you need to get going with these puzzles is something to write with and some coloured crayons or markers.

This first set of puzzles help build confidence with numbers 0 through 10. Children will have lots of practise at identifying and naming numbers as well as ordering them. And of course, there will be lots of counting practice. Scratch Jr. was developed by Tufts University, PBS Kids, and the MIT Media Lab and is an offshoot of the popular Scratch App. While Scratch is intended for children eight and up, Scratch Jr. was created for younger kids ages five to seven. Scratch Jr. has a similar look/feel to Scratch and is based on the same idea of creating interactive stories.

Scratch Jr. allows kids to create artboards and stories with characters that can talk and move around the artboard. Scratch Jr. does not expose kids to any actual code; rather, it reinforces coding concepts through the use of puzzle pieces (drag-and-drop programming) that allow kids to control their character. Each puzzle piece designates a different action or movement. Kids can not only select the order of the movements of their character but they can also use loops and functions to repeat actions.

Kodable was founded in 2012 and, along with CodeHS boasts, a K-12 pathway for kids to learn to code. Kodable offers kids the ability to create and customize characters in addition to drag-and-drop style programming that is common to all of the apps covered in this article. When I set out to write these puzzle books, I wanted to write puzzles that would allow children to learn and test their skills without feeling the burden of schoolwork. I reasoned that maths, English and general knowledge are the foundations of everything else that follows in education. It's all too easy to get onto the school treadmill of testing and results that can put unnecessary stress onto a child.

I am also a firm believer in parents being interested in their child's education. Unlike workbooks, anyone in the family can sit with a child and enjoy these puzzles together.
