about Felix vaux

I'm an evolutionary biologist with keen interests in evolutionary ecology, population genomics, phylogenetics, biosecurity and geometric morphometrics.

I'm currently a Marine Biosecurity Scientist at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). I'm also an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Zoology at the University of Otago. I have previously enjoyed working in both industry and academia.

In general, my research considers the process of evolution through time, from variation among individuals to outcomes such as speciation and extinction. My work helps with the interpretation, management and conservation of populations, species, and further biological diversity.

I enjoy academic writing, illustration and online engagement as much as problem solving, statistics, labwork and fieldwork. I've generated, managed and curated large bioinformatic datasets. I'm particularly experienced with reduced-representation genome sequencing (e.g. RADseq, GBS), small whole-genome sequencing (i.e. bacterial WGS), and geometric morphometric analyses.

I'm well known to be organised and capable of leading large investigations in a timely and personable manner, from communication with stakeholders, through fieldwork, labwork and analysis to publication. I deeply care about the curation and protection of sensitive data, but where possible I strongly support open science and data and I'm always passionate to publicly share my research.

I grew up in rural southern England and currently live in New Zealand.

Please check out my publications, data, presentations and online outreach. You can also download my CV.
