Packing to go

It is September 1939, and the government of Great Britain has been organising to evacuate children from key cities such as London. You are one such child and your name is Alfred. Tomorrow you are going to be sent on a train into the countryside. The government believe that war is imminent as they know Hitler is about to invade Poland bringing to an end Neville Chamberlain’s policy of appeasement. They fear, given Hitler’s actions in using Blitzkrieg, where he has attacked cities from the air, that he will attack civilian populations in Great Britain when they declare war. To keep children safe, they have organised to have them sent from many big cities and industrial areas to the countryside.

You are 10 years old and have a little sister who is 6. Tonight you must pack for the journey. You know mother is trying to be brave but can have heard her crying in the bedroom and have heard father comforting her and telling her that it is for the best. Father is a fireman and mother a nurse so their contribution to the war effort is vital and there is no question that she can come with you.

Sadly, you pack your suitcase. What should go in it. You look at the list that was given to you by your teacher.
