Reflecting on one’s inner teacher ;) through art-based methods.
Find out what makes you a teacher / learner through art.
Learning, reflecting &building your own teacher/learner identity.
Exchange with others about what makes you a teacher / learner, reflect on what shapes you as a teacher / learner.
This exercise can be done with pre- and in-service teachers but also with students, teacher teams at schools, etc.
We suggest homogenous groups in the sense of professional backgrounds, e.g., in-service teachers in specific groups
Whatever works for unleashing your inner Picasso, Frieda or Banksy :)
Bring several glues, papers, scissors, and whatever can be turned into art - we suggest scraps of old newspapers, left-over paper etc. in order to be sustainable and not limit creativity, we suggest to use recycled materials.
Allow up to 2 hours / Groups of up to 15 people
Use a simple but effective prompt such as: "How would you visualize your teacher identity?"
Allow a specific amount of time, using every material available and every form of expression.
Emphasize that it is not about artistic perfection but spontaneity.
After finishing, set up a little gallery. Now make time for a gallery walk, walk from exhibit to exhibit and allow everybody to explain what they created. Take time to admire :) and ask questions!
Don't forget to give a title to your piece of art.
If someone feels like creating something digital - why not?
Take it home, find some space for a little exhibit in the school premises, seminar rooms etc.
This exercise might also be useful for lateral entrants to explore their teacher-being.
If you want to you can take it to the next level and shake up things: Building bridges between different perspectives that identities bring about might be interesting. Why not ask half your group to think of their learner and the other one of teacher identities? You can then use some yarn and try to make ends meet... in the sense of building bridges between the two "sides".
