This is an instructional WebQuest tasking students to research the motivations, movements, and effects of European Colonization following the Big6 / Super3 Inquiry Framework, ISTE Standards, and meeting Content Standards for 7th Grade World History – Social Studies.
Grade 7 World History / Social Studies Duration: 1 Week
Driving Question
"What are the motivations and effects of European Colonization?"
WH.4.4 Explain the consequences of and resistance to the conquests and colonization as a result of the worldwide voyages of exploration, including the transatlantic slave trade, Columbian Exchange, and the effects on native populations in the Americas. (E)
WH.4.5 Examine the reactions against European Exploration including reactions in China, Japan, Africa, and the Americas.
7.H.11 Explain the reasons for European colonization of Africa, Asia, and the Southwest Pacific and analyze the impact that colonization, imperialism, and slavery had on the social, political, and economic development of these societies from both European and indigenous perspectives. (E)

2.5 Designer – WebQuest is designed as a tech medium to foster learning and research.
This WebQuest provides the opportunity for student-driven analysis of research and historical perspectives. Timeframe: 1 week.
Step 1 – Introduction: Introduce the topic after learning about European civilization during 1300–1750 CE. Show CrashCourse videos on Colonization to introduce the topic.
Step 2 – Facilitation: Teachers should be readily available to address concerns and facilitate time management. Be prepared to encourage deeper delving into additional sources while keeping students on track and on topic.
Step 3 – Seminar: At the end of the week, facilitate the class 'researcher's conference.' Students present their infographics and collectively map the spread and effects of European Colonialism.
Students will be given the opportunity to embark on student-driven research to utilize technology skills to develop an infographic and to collaborate through presentation of their findings.
