In the context of the first Transnational Meeting of the EuroBird project that took place in León (Spain), on March 4, 2020, an ornithological tour was carried out around the area of the Natural Reserve of the lagoons of Villafáfila (Zamora).
To this end, the representatives of each organization met at 10:00 a.m. in the Hotel Silk Fray Luis de León and undertook a trip of approximately one hour and average duration until arriving at the Casa del Parque "El Palomar", located in these lagoons, which represent an important tourist resource for the area (especially when it comes to bird watching), due to its peculiar natural features.
Once there, the environmental interpreter received the visitors and began to give some explanations regarding the gaps (origin, training, problems, etc.) and the most characteristic species of fauna that could be found in them.
The interior of the installation was toured, paying attention to the explanations provided by the guide and observing the informative posters and interactive panels, where you can also drawings and photographs could be seen that supported the content described; the was visited store and the tourist products that derive from the activity of bird watching (food products, stationery, souvenirs, jewelry, etc). From the upper floor, a more general view of the lagoons and, with the help of binoculars, the interior of a dovecote was observed in the that several pigeons (Columba livia) rested in their nests.
Lastly, a documentary was screened with additional information on the set of gaps, so that some issues were more broadly defined.
Later, they proceeded to visit the exterior of the lagoons, where they could observe numerous species of birds, most of them aquatic, among which were: tufted pochard (Aythya fuligula), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), coot (Fulica atra), common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) and Gadwalla (Mareca strepera). But the most remarkable thing about this route was the contemplation, from a bird watching booth, of the species star of the area: captive specimens of the great bustard (Otis tarda), which are were seen on numerous occasions.
At the end of the visit, the interpreter offered to take a short guided tour of the outside the facilities in order to observe specimens of great bustard in freedom with the help of binoculars and a telescope. You were lucky to find large families of this species within a relatively short distance, even in full flight.
The visit concluded around 2:00 p.m., at which time the trip began Back to Leon.
