The Eudemonist Society was founded on January 1, 1999 with two divisions.  One to promote the study and performance of early music, and one to fund medical research to alleviate the decline that occurs with human aging.  For more detail, please read below an excerpt from the Eudemonist Society Bylaws:

Article I:  Purpose of the Eudemonist Society

The purpose of the society is twofold:

1) To promote the study and performance of music composed and recorded in written form prior to the year 1820 AD.

a.  Subject to the provisions of Article I (3) of these bylaws.

b. Written means the physical imprint of characters meant, by their human creator(s), to convey musical meaning affixed to a physical object.

2) To fund reproducible, peer reviewed research in bio and medical science with the goal of longer more youthful human life.

a.  Subject to the provisions of Article I (3) of these bylaws.

b. Reproducible shall mean experiments with the following characteristics:

                                                    i. Hypothesis:  A proposed explanation for a phenomenon recorded in advance of the experiment,

                                                  ii. A statement of materials and methods used in the experiment adequately recorded so that the experiment can be repeated,

                                                iii. A prediction based on the hypothetical explanation of the phenomenon and the materials and methods used in the experiment,

                                                iv. A statement of the measured results,

                                                  v. A discussion of the results including possible reasons if the results were not as predicted,

                                                vi. The use of controls to minimize possible misinterpretation of cause effect relationships,

                                              vii. The use of double blind procedures when testing the effects of substances in clinical trials, and

                                            viii.     The use of adequate numbers of experimental subjects to provide for statistical significance of results.

c.  Peer reviewed shall mean that the studies conducted by the society shall be made available for peer review provided any intellectual property accruing to the society shall have been protected.

d. Bio science shall mean the sciences relating to biological systems.

e.  Medical science shall mean science applicable in clinical settings with human subjects.

f.  Funding shall include providing direct support to institutions and individuals. 

3) The proportion of charitable distributions net of expenses allocable to Article I  item (1) shall be about 30% (thirty percent) and the proportion of charitable distributions allocable to Article I item (2) shall be about 70% (seventy percent) of total charitable distributions in each calendar year. 

a.  For the purpose of this paragraph (I)(3), “about” shall mean plus or minus a maximum of 5% (five percent). 

b. In the event allocations fall outside the bounds described in this paragraph in any calendar year, the directors shall allocate distributions such that the five year average lies within the bounds.
