Rules of Euchre
(pronounced yoo-ker)
Introduction: Euchre is traditionally played with a 24-card deck, stripped down from the standard 52-card deck. Use only the Ace through 9 of each suit. Discard the rest.
Teams: Euchre is played with four players - two competing teams of two.
Objective of each hand: In Euchre, the main objective is to win at least three tricks. If the team that declares the trump suit fails to achieve this, they are considered "euchred."
Objective of the game: Usually, the first team to reach 10 points wins the game, although shorter games may be played to 5 or 7 points if agreed upon beforehand. In Euchre Helper settings, there is an option to change the number of points needed to win if the teams do not want to play to 10.
The Shuffle and Cut: The dealer shuffles the cards. The dealer offers the player to the dealer’s right an opportunity to cut the deck. Each portion of the cut must contain at least four cards.
The Deal: Cards are dealt clockwise, starting from the player to the dealer's left. Each player receives five cards, distributed in groups of either 2 and 3 or 3 and 2, with the dealer following their chosen distribution plan. Once the dealer has completed dealing five cards to each player, the dealer takes the remaining four undealt cards and places them face-down in front of himself. The top card of this pile is turned face-up for all players to see. This card’s suit is the first option for trump for the first round of “Determining the Trump Suit.” (see below)
Card Rankings: Trump suits are determined by the card turned up by the dealer. The highest trump card is the jack of the trump suit, known as the "right bower." The other jack of the same color is the second-highest trump, called the "left bower." Other cards rank from ace (high) to 9 (low). If this seems a bit confusing, don’t worry. Euchre Helper is here for you. While learning the game, the trump hierarchy may be turned on in the settings and displayed on Euchre Helper’s main screen.
Determining the Trump Suit:
Players, beginning with the player to the dealer's left, decide whether to pass or accept the turned-up card’s suit as trump.
If a player accepts the turned-up card’s suit as trump, the dealer gets to place that card in his hand and must discard one card out of his hand in order to hold only five cards.
You might declare you want the trump by saying something like, "I order it up" (opponents) or "I assist" (partner) or “Let’s try it”.
If all players pass initially and the dealer does not want to name the turned-up card as trump, the dealer usually turns the turned-up card upside down hiding it signifying he does not want to order that suit as trump.
The option to name the trump suit then continues around to each player in the same order. Each player can pass again or name a different trump suit. This trump suit must be different from the previously turned-up card.
If all players pass again, the round is over and all cards are passed to the next dealer for a new shuffle and distribution of cards.
Once trump is selected, the appropriate trump suit icon should be tapped at the bottom of the Euchre Helper screen to prominently display the trump for all players to see. This way, a player will not forget what the trump suit is.
Going Alone: The player who orders the trump suit has the option to declare they would like to play alone. They declare they are "going alone" or "playing alone" when making the trump, prompting their partner to turn their cards face down and abstain from the play. This “alone” player is solely responsible for winning their teams three tricks. But, if they are successful in winning all five available tricks, their team can get extra points (see scoring below).
Scoring:
Winning 3 or 4 tricks as the trump-calling team earns 1 point. Click in the app to add one point.
Winning all 5 tricks as the trump-calling team earns points.
Winning 3 or 4 tricks when playing alone earns point.
Winning all 5 tricks when playing alone earns points.
If a team is euchred, the opposing team scores points.
Keeping Score with Low Card Markers: Traditionally, players who did not have the Euchre Helper app could use a unique method of keeping score using lower-ranked cards (like the 6 and 4) as markers. These cards are positioned face up or face down to uncover the correct number of spots to represent their score. Players to like this way of scoring may turn on the option to replace the numerals of the score boxes with playing cards. This option is in the Euchre Helper settings.
Determining teams: Choose teams however you’d like - or even play a round robin tournament! But, if you are having difficulty choosing teams and the first dealer, some will have each player draw one card from the deck. The two lowest cards become one team against a team of the two highest cards. The player holding the lowest card deals first.
