Trends: A.I. in Teaching
ITEC - 5070
ITEC - 5070
This course is designed for educators keen on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) as a transformative teaching and learning tool. Participants will explore the fundamentals of AI technology, learn how to effectively use tools (i.e., ChatGPT, MagicSchool, DALL-E, etc.), and explore AI features of familiar productivity tools you likely already use. This course includes an exploration of critical ideas related to AI use in classroom practice and sessions on developing AI-driven educational resources and strategies for fostering critical thinking and creativity in content-focused learning.
Directions: Write a draft of a position statement about AI use (teacher and student) for one course you teach.
This does not need to be lengthy- a paragraph or 5-7 bullet points might be enough.
Identify the course and student level. Clearly explain what you expect of students when using AI tools. Keep in mind what you have learned in this module about tools with AI capabilities and Generative AI that supports creative creation.
The length, voice, and format of this statement should be consistent with your typical syllabus or instructional materials for the learners you teach.
*If you do not teach, you can make up a sample class population or craft an "acceptable use" type policy for your current job.
Can we use AI to foster a genuine culture of inquiry and intellectual curiosity in our classrooms? Is that even possible?
Think about how can you use AI to support your practice of creating things for your students? ("Things" is open for interpretation- assessments, assignments, content, images, whatever you might create for your students.)
Then, find an activity or lesson idea that an educator in your field uses in their practice. It can be an activity that uses AI tools (GenAI or other AI-driven tools)
You might find this idea by talking with colleagues, looking at emerging research about AI, or finding an example online. If you cannot find something in the field, look for something that uses a teaching practice or pedagogy you typically use in your classroom- i.e. lecture, discussion, lab, etc.
If you are already using AI, you can use a lesson/activity you created or dive in and create one to share for this assignment. Again, creating your own lesson/activity is not necessary- but that is an option for application.
The integration of AI tools into teaching practices brings both exciting opportunities and significant challenges. To successfully incorporate these technologies, it is crucial to identify and address potential obstacles and honestly review AI tools.
The task: You will pick ONE AI tool that is free or has a decent free component.
You will first play with that tool by trying to make something useful for your job. It could be a lesson incorporating that AI tool to use with your students. It could be using AI to make something for your class or job (the behind the scenes stuff to get ready). Don't just click through the AI tool- really play and try to create something or use it to simplify a task you need to do for work.
You will then be creating a review of that tool. Why should others use it, or not use it?
The goal of this project is to create an innovative product by applying your knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in a teaching/learning context. You will demonstrate your learning through a practical application of the concepts, ideas, and skills developed throughout class.
You will build a project that you can use in your future teaching/learning context (personalized). A choice board with several ideas is available to guide you. You may tailor your work to fit your needs as an educator, your audience, and your areas of interest. This could be anything from a learning module to your own chatbot.
