Show your child the lines and go through what they are each called. Invite your child to create their own names as well and write them next to the image.

Make it challenging by varying the size I.e. large and very small. Your child will need to use very small wrist and finger movements to make it small.

Draw 5 – 10 rectangles or squares on each paper (Numbers will vary based on your child’s ability to recognise and understand 1 to 1 correspondence).

On the white paper write the number 1 – 5 or 10 in each rectangle shape (One number in one rectangle). Invite your child to write the numbers on their own if they can do so. Provide support where necessary.

On the coloured paper write one action word in each rectangle e.g. jump, skip, hop, roll, spin, step, wiggle, slide, run, walk, dance, etc. Invite child to share these action words and add on as and when necessary.

Go through each number and action words. Inform your child that you will be mixing the cards I.e. one pile for numbers and another pile with action words.

Turn on the music and invite your child to dance. Inform them that they will have to stop dancing when the music stops.

Make a Lego Rainbow 制作乐高彩虹:
Draw a rainbow on the large drawing paper to use as a visual organizer for your child. You can also let your child do this.

Invite your child to sort the Legos by colour. You may use any other toys available at home that matches the colours of the rainbow (or as close as possible).

Draw 3 or 4 cm wide lines on the 2 coloured papers your child has chosen.

Invite your child to cut along the lines. Provide guidance and please ensure all safety precautions are taken when your child uses a scissors. Help your child when necessary. Continue to encourage and praise your child for their cutting skills even when it's not straight. It is the doing (process) that is important not the end results. With regular practice your child will soon be able to follow the lines when cutting.

Start with a basic pattern of two colors which is an AB pattern e.g. red=A and blue=B (e.g: red/blue/red/blue).

Teach your child how to make the paper chain – take 1 strip fold it and staple, take the other colour and link it through the paper chain and staple. Always do the stapling for your child and consider safety.

As your child gains confidence in recognizing the basic AB pattern, allow them to continue until all the papers have been used.

As children practice with patterning encourage your child to look around the house, for items that form a pattern in the everyday world. E.g. in the clothing you wear, floor, windows etc...
