Abstract

Stinging nettle (Urticadioica) is a wild plant consumed traditionally in many parts of the world. It is a rich source of nutrition and also well known for its medicinal values. However very few studies are available to indicate its nutritional worth. The nutrients are substances that are required by human for growth, cellular activities, and overall physiological functions to live whereas term “antinutrients” suggests what they are as they can block the absorption of nutrients. For the wellbeing or good health bioaccessibility and bioavailability of nutrients is very crucial. Present study was planned to know the richness of nutritional minerals as well as anti-nutrient in the nettle leaves. The results of laboratory analysis show that the nettle leaves are rich source of macro minerals Ca, Mg, P, K,Na, and micro minerals Fe, Zn, Mn, Bo, Co, Cu, Cr, Mo and Se. However, it also contains phytate that impairs the bioavailability of the Ca, Fe and Zn. The molar ratio of phytate to these minerals indicate that phytate content in nettle leaves is not impairing the Ca and Zn bioavailability but Fe bioavailability is affected negatively.

Abstract

Having originated in Central Asia, Cannabis plant also known as Bhanga, Indrasana, Vijaya or Jaya in hindi and Sanskrit is a popular plant in India despite of its notorious property. It enjoys unique cultural significance apart from its food, medicinal and fiber properties for long. Traditional use of Cannabis (bhanga) seed in cuisine of Kumaun region is still very popular. Scanty archaeobotanical reports as well as literary evidences are available to give the antiquity of Cannabis in India that traces its antiquity in India to the third millennium BCE. Yet, the results are inadequate to decipher its use as seed or fiber. Based on literature search this paper aims to evaluate efficacy of Cannabis seed concerning its ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacology and other ethnobotanical uses. Although studies supporting health benefits of cannabis seed consumption are few, researches available on nutritional profile indicate promise for future. As food, the species has tremendous nutritional potential for human well-being as well as animal and poultry feed. However there are few incidences recorded for the allergic reaction to either hemp pollen or THC. Despite its prehistoric significance, limited researches have been done as it was banned for cultivation.Keeping its future potential in view, there is a need to undertake more coordinated researches to establish its significance in nutrition and also validation studies so that applicability of cannabis could be established properly against various diseases.

Abstract

Inhabitants of the hilly regions largely depend on wildplants for food supplements. The indigenous knowledgeand traditional use of these wild edible plants arevanishing fast. Janjehli valley is a rich source of wildedible plants situated in Mandi district of HimachalPradesh, North Western Himalaya. In view of this anattempt has been made to assess the wild edible plants ofJanjehli valley. Total 57 wild edible plants belonging to32 families and 48 genera were recorded based onextensive and intensive surveys and interviews of the localknowledgeable people. 31 species were natives and 17species near endemic to Indian Himalayan Region.Different parts of the plants were utilized, of which fruits(30), followed by leaves (17), seeds (10) roots (05) andwhole plant (07) and were used the maximum. Populationassessment using quadrat method to identify the potentialvalues, technique for sustainable harvesting, establishmentand maintenance in ex-situ and in-situ conditions andinvolvement of local communities and Forest Departmentin conservation have been suggested.
