Sofia Jaime
Sofia Jaime is a Ph.D. student in Sociology at the University of California, Irvine, where she studies the intersection of technology, inequality, and race with demographic and computational social sciences methodologies. Her research combines quantitative methods and sociological theory to examine how fairness is assessed and biases are mitigated in AI systems. She is the co-author of “Ethnic Classifications in Algorithmic Fairness: Concepts, Measures and Implications in Practice” (ACM Digital Library, 2024). Sofia also organized Women in Data Science (WiDS) Munich 2023, bringing together international voices to advance equity in data science and AI. Saverio Roscigno
Saverio Roscigno is a PhD student in sociology at the University of California, Irvine. Trained in survey methods as well as in-depth interviewing, his current work focuses on knowledge production in the online conspiracy milieu. Drawing from sociological theorization on culture, inequality, technology and knowledge, he is especially interested in the relation between deviant online cultures and offline inequalities.
Chris Chih-Hua Tseng
Chris Chih-Hua Tseng is a sociology Ph.D. student at UC Irvine. He is also a non-resident fellow at the Research Institute for Democracy, Society, and Emerging Technologies (DSET), a government-funded think tank in Taiwan. Previously, he worked at the RAND Corporation as a summer associate and at the Legislative Yuan, Taiwan’s unicameral congress, as a legislative assistant. He is a comparative-historical sociologist studying political economy, political sociology, and contentious politics. His current research focuses on export controls and the semiconductor industry, and his past research explored topics of social movements in democratic countries facing external threats and welfare state transformation in East Asia. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology from the National Taiwan University.
Risako Ninomiya
Risako is a second year Sociology PhD student at UCI. Her research explores the consequences of gender equality and inclusion in civil society and science. She has experience working at international organizations dedicated to advancing women’s participation in education, labor force, and leadership. She has also worked a non-profit focused on stimulating interest in STEM among girls. She holds a BA in International Liberal Studies from Waseda University and an MA in International Comparative Education from Stanford University.
Xinyue Wei
Xinyue Wei is a Ph.D. student in Political Science at the University of California, Irvine. Her current research focuses on the legibility of state capacity, development, and inequality. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked with UNICEF, where she contributed to efforts aimed at closing the digital divide in early childhood development—particularly in post-conflict settings—and supported displaced parents and children through digital learning platforms. Her past research has also examined the protection of children’s online privacy in China. Xinyue holds a B.A. in Russian Language and Literature and an M.A. in International Relations from Fudan University.
Seyfullah Ozkurt
Seyfullah Ozkurt is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on political repression, mass detention, and securitization, with particular attention to how states use algorithms and data systems to target individuals and communities. His dissertation project examines how political discourse, legal mechanisms, and algorithmic systems converge to reclassify populations as security threats, across multiple cases, including Turkey and China. Seyfullah's work draws on interviews, discourse analysis, and analysis of digital infrastructures to examine the intersection of technology and authoritarian governance. He holds a B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from Boğaziçi University and an M.A. in Political Science from Marquette University.
