Have you ever wanted to do your own introduction? Have you ever forgotten the words to the song you're singing? Would you like to amp up your bardic presence, sharpen your wits, liven up your stories, or be able to make bleep up on the spot? Then improv is your friend! This participatory workshop class is to learn about improv, how it can help you in your performances, and to join in and have fun! For people of all skill levels, newcomer-friendly.

This class addresses the various health and pedagogical concerns that may arise when performing in the SCA, both in vocal and instrumental settings. Topics covered will include personal health habits, environmental factors, ergonomics vs authenticity, and how to have conversations with your healthcare provider about any concerns you may have.

Introduction to Classical Arabic Music -- Teacher: Sayyida Laila al-Sanna’ al-Andalusiyya’

All levels welcome. Come with your instrument or be prepared to sing. Reading music is not required. Are you interested in what gives Arabic music it’s distinct sound? The answer lies in it’s intricate system of scales and rhythms. In this class we will outline the elements of Arabic music, learn a few of the most popular scales (maqamat) and rhythmic structures (iqaat), and experiment with melodic improvisation in each mode.

Sometimes it takes Esprit de Corps. Tell us in song, story, or poem of such a time where togetherness won the day!

3 Gods walk into a bar...:

Present a spoken work of Folktale, Fable, or Mythology. (*around 5 minutes or less please)

Blow Someone Else's Horn:

Perform the work of another SCAdian. Extra applause for memorizing and for doing something that is not well-known. We’ll have a special chair up front for the author of your piece, if they are in attendance, to be recognized for their work.

Now that we can dimly see a light at the end of the covid tunnel, is there a need/use/desire for future on-line bardic activities in a post-lockdown world? Where do we go from here?

Proper Care and Feeding of Musical Instruments -- Teacher: Teuctli Tenochcacuicatl Delmar (CANCELLED)

This class addresses the various issues involved in taking care of an instrument beyond simple tuning factors, all from the perspective of a former technician. Topics covered include traveling and camping care, environmental and daily factors to consider, simple preventative measures, and general does and do nots regarding instrument care.

Courtesans and the Performing Arts -- Teacher: Sayyida Laila al-Sanna’ al-Andalusiyya’

18 and over. No prerequisites. All over the world, the history and development of the performing arts has been intimately tied to sex work. This class will explore the role that courtesans and other sex workers have played as both performers and patrons, and the ways in which they helped mold visual, musical, and dramatic aesthetics in their home nations. We will discuss courtesans from many different times and places, including hetaerae (Greece), devadasis and rajadasis (India), oiran (Japan), Safavid Persian courtesans, and Italian courtesans.
