An excerpt from my opera, Il Lamento Del Mondo (August 2026)

Hi! My name is Ethan Cumberbatch and I’m a 14 year old musician from Cambridge, UK. Alongside composing, I also play the cello, piano, recorder and organ. My aim with my music is to unlock a vast range of emotions within people. FROM HOPE to heartbreak, TO LONGING AND JOY, THERE'S A PLACE FOR ALL OF THEM IN MY MUSIC.

NOTABLE Projects

IL LAMENTO DEL MONDO

An Opera in three acts, loosely based on the events of the Great Fire of London and the Black Death. My longest, greatest and most substantial work so far is written for a double wind orchestra with several soloists. Primarily in the key of D minor, the work begins with an overture of great instrumental breadth, the whole piece ending in a tear-evoking aria, adding a beautiful, melancholy ending to the tragic story of loss, love and innocence.

CORONATION SUITE

Six short pieces for organ, piano and violin ranging from quick fugal movements to fiery and virtuosic final movements, with multiple slower movements forming the main architecture for this collection of movements, the last piece having the added instrument of fireworks, fit for the setting of this royal and magisterial piece.

PIANO CONCERTO NO.1 IN C MAJOR

A concerto for piano, orchestra and chamber choir displaying a range of different musical styles each linking together into a powerful recapitulative fourth and final movement, summarising every one of the beautiful tunes from the earlier movements and letting them flourish and bloom into a virtuosic and powerful finale.

THE LESSON SONATAS

The Lesson Sonatas are a series of movements ranging from an orchestra to just solo piano and voice, ending in a final movement with a full SATB choir and orchestra with the addition of a piano which takes on a solo and concerto like role. Overall, the piece covers a broad spectrum of what can be done with these instruments.
