The Serpent's Tale was a game concept I had for a long time, before finally creating a prototype as my final in Rapid Game Development class. As a solo-developed project, I covered the art, programming, UI, and writing. This concept includes a 2D map, grid-based combat, multiple enemy types, character dialogue/story, usable items, and playable characters that have unique stats and attacks. Development took 4-5 weeks at the end of 2022, and while there are a number of things that can be tuned, I'm rather satisfied with the result, which took a lot of hard work.
The concept revolves around the combat, which was meant to be a midpoint between turn-based and real-time combat. Despite being compared to Mega Man Battle Network, it was actually based on Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Fire Emblem. As a result, it focuses more on using the strengths of each party member as a team rather than quick-paced combat alone. The player can choose to leverage items and stats to win battles, or use the movement to dodge and counter-attack without taking damage. The goal was to allow multiple ways to win, and to give the player the tools to win RPG battles without getting hit.
