Getting into an M.Tech program at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) involves a centralized and structured process. This guide explains everything from the GATE exam to final admission — with clarity and icons for easy navigation.
Appear for the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) in your relevant paper (e.g., ME, EE, CS).
Must secure a valid GATE score (valid for 3 years).
Each IIT has its own cutoffs and eligibility depending on department and category (GEN/OBC/SC/ST/EWS).
👉 For current-year admission, a fresh GATE score is strongly preferred.

COAP is the centralized platform to view and accept M.Tech offers from IITs.
❗ Note: COAP is not an application portal. You must apply to each IIT separately.
You can view admission offers and make decisions through COAP.
Visit the official website of each IIT.
Fill the M.Tech application form.
Upload:
GATE Scorecard 🎫
Degree Certificate 📜
Category Certificate (if applicable) 🏷️
Photo & Signature 🖼️
Pay the non-refundable application fee (₹300–₹500 per IIT).
💡 Apply to multiple IITs to maximize your chances.
Visit: https://coap.iitkgp.ac.in/
Enter GATE details (Year, Reg. No., Score).
Verify via OTP and create password.
You will get a COAP Registration Number. Use this in all IIT applications.
📌 Registration is free. Without it, you cannot access offers.
COAP releases a schedule of multiple rounds (typically 5 main + additional rounds).
In each round:
You may receive admission offers
Or No Offer, if cutoffs are higher than your score
If you receive an offer, you have 4 choices:
✅ Accept and Freeze – Lock the offer. You exit COAP.
🔄 Retain and Wait – Accept the offer, but stay in the race for better ones.
❌ Reject and Wait – Decline the offer and hope for better in next round.
🚫 No Action – Considered as “Reject and Wait” by default.
💡 Prefer "Retain and Wait" if aiming for better IIT or specialization.
Once you accept an offer:
The respective IIT will contact you via email.
Follow their instructions, which may include:
Uploading documents online 📁
