The history of mental health in the Philippines is a complex and nuanced one, marked by a range of cultural, social, and economic factors that have contributed to the development and perpetuation of various mental health problems.
One significant factor has been the country’s colonial history, which has been marked by centuries of subjugation and oppression by foreign powers. This has led to a legacy of trauma and marginalization that has had a profound impact on the mental well-being of many Filipinos. Additionally, the Philippines has also struggled with poverty and inequality, which have been linked to higher rates of mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. This has been exacerbated by a lack of access to quality mental health care, particularly in rural areas where resources are limited.
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of addressing mental health issues in the Philippines, and efforts have been made to increase access to mental health services and improve the overall quality of care. However, much work remains to be done in order to fully address the mental health needs of the Filipino people.
The statistics on mental health in the Philippines reveal a significant burden of mental illness in the country, with an estimated one in eight Filipinos affected by mental disorders, with depression and anxiety being the most common conditions. The country also has one of the highest suicide rates in Southeast Asia, with an estimated 4,000 deaths by suicide when the pandemic started. The prevalence of mental health problems is likely to be under-reported due to stigma and lack of access to services, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and investment in mental health.

PROJECT I'mPossible
INTRODUCTION
ConvoCare is a transformative organization that seeks to liberate the voiceless and upholds the belief that every person has an inherent right to self-expression without fear of judgment. Our ambitious objective is to revolutionize the global community, beginning with the youth as the catalyst for change. Our mission is to extend compassion and support to all individuals, particularly those grappling with mental health issues, and to create a community that is unequivocally dedicated to listening and understanding their struggles. Our aspiration is to offer not only rehabilitation centers and shelters, but also therapeutic interventions that emancipate individuals from the shackles of emotional suppression, and to provide a sanctuary where their emotions are acknowledged, where they can connect with others facing similar challenges, and where they feel understood and respected.
PURPOSE
The ConvoCare Organization aspires to launch a transformative initiative, entitled “I’mpossible,” aimed at providing unparalleled and accessible mental health support to individuals grappling with mental health challenges and feeling overwhelmed. The paramount objective of this endeavor is to empower and uplift those who may currently perceive their circumstances as insurmountable, and to instill in them a sense of self-assurance, optimism, and worth. Through this initiative, we aim to liberate them from the limiting thoughts and emotions that impede their ability to accomplish their aspirations, and to remind them that they are valued and cherished members of our society. In doing so, we hope to catalyze a paradigm shift in their outlook and to inspire them to realize the full extent of their capabilities and potential.
DESCRIPTION
The ConvoCare Organization, derived from the words “conversation” and “care”, seeks to establish a robust and supportive community for individuals who are contending with the complexities of mental health challenges. As the backbone of the ambitious project, “I’mpossible,” the organization aims to provide a comprehensive array of rehabilitation facilities, therapy services, and educational seminars, all under the guidance of esteemed healthcare professionals and social welfare workers. The seminars, held every fourth Sunday of the month in various community locations and accessible online via Zoom, will be divided into three distinct segments: an enlightening introduction, which aims to heighten awareness and understanding of mental health and mental disorders; a participatory segment, where attendees will have the opportunity to share their experiences and listen to the stories of those who also struggle; and a transformative segment, where attendees will be equipped with effective coping strategies, encouragement, and support to aid them in overcoming their challenges. This initiative will provide invaluable benefits to all individuals, regardless of their socio-economic status, who are facing mental health challenges.
The action plan to address this critical issue includes:
1. Recruiting dedicated and compassionate members, particularly youth, to establish a strong foundation and community for those struggling with mental health disorders
2. Creating safe and nurturing facilities to provide a sense of refuge and comfort for individuals
3. Carefully selecting and screening knowledgeable and skilled social welfare workers and medical professionals to ensure the effectiveness of the project
4. Once the rehabilitation center is established and the team is in place, each member will be assigned specific responsibilities, including reaching out to and engaging members of the community who are struggling with mental health issues and providing support to the guardians of mentally ill loved ones, all at no cost.
5. The “I’mpossible” is also inclusive of activities that will help people with mental disorder to recover fast in the facility they are in. These are:
• Interactive bulletin board
• Bible studies for spiritual growth
• Livelihood programs
• Group meditation
• Engaging in fruitful and productive pastimes
