The world of work is rapidly changing. Using today’s mobile devices, if you’ve got some time to spare you can make a few bucks. You’ve heard about these companies on the news or perhaps even used one - Uber, Doordash, Taskrabbit. You’ll drive someone around, clean out an apartment, tutor someone online, or deliver a meal. Work as little or as much as you want with little to no obligation. Sound great? Well, not so fast.

Welcome to the changing world of 21st century work... powered by mobile technologies.

My name is Christopher Wong. I’m a Masters student at the University of British Columbia studying the relationship between technology and education. I was a part of the gig economy in the pre-mobile era, picking up small jobs here and there - passing out Metro newspapers in front Skytrain stations and working as part of street promotions teams for Seymour Mountain and the 2010 Olympic games. I’ve even had fantasies working as a bike messenger. I’ve got a business degree and although I’m working in a classroom, I’ve never lost my interest in following disruptive business trends.
