Despite these obstacles, I am confident that innovations in science will allow us to overcome them. Some see implanted sensors as the beginnings of the transhumanist movement, which imagines a future when humans will be able to transcend their biological limitations through science and technology. Although I have focussed on one particular market for implantable sensors, that is the fitness market, their impact will probably be far greater for the general health marketplace.
Let us return to imagining a world where doctors can diagnose health issues wherever the patient is. The patient simply sends the compiled data to doctors remotely from their smartphone. Better yet - as data from hundreds of thousands of users is uploaded and analysed, patterns will emerge and perhaps a doctor consultation for such cases will be unnecessary. The implantable sensor can be the first step in demystifying our bodies and using accurate, scientific data to base our health and fitness decisions on.
