Do different learners need different forms of AI support?
Below, you will meet three cognitively diverse learners in the Genially. A cognitively diverse learner is someone whose way of thinking and learning differs from others, and who may benefit from flexible, inclusive teaching approaches that recognize and support those differences. We want you to infer whether the current AI tools used are adapting to the learners performance, or to their actual cognitive needs.
AI is progressively getting smarter at detecting cognitive variability. In particular, there are Artificial Intelligence in Education Technologies developed such as Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) that perform functions of the like. Notebook LM, Napkin AI, Goblin Tools, Chat GPT, MS Copilot, and Elicit all fall under the AIED umbrella, although not all may be ITS. The University of Cambridge underwent a study that analyzed data of students who were struggling in school using AI. “AI identified four areas of learning difficulties based on granular measures of listening, memory, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving”. (Holmes et al., 2019) The researchers found that diagnosing struggling learners based on these four clusters was both more accurate and useful with addressing individual learning needs, compared to using the broad labels of “ADHD, dyslexia, or autism” as there can be an ambiguous spectrum attached to those learning disabilities. This proves that AI does play a positive role in understanding cognitive diversity.
