Learning Intentions
Through exploration of this Open Educational Resource (OER), you will be able to:
Define augmented reality and understand potential positive effects of implementation
Understand potential barriers to integration in an educational context
Access resources to aid in overcoming obstacles to implementing AR in an educational context
Explore an example of an AR enabled learning experience to locate and supplement information
Reflection Prompts
Do you have any past experience in creating AR experiences? What opportunities were afforded by using AR technology?
Other than the identified critiques of using AR in an educational context, are there any barriers you could anticipate to incorporating AR into your personal practice?
Now that AR has become more prevalent on mobile devices, are you more or less likely to incorporate AR into your practice? Why or why not?
How do you foresee mobile technology-based AR's role in education? In society?
How do you think that AR experiences will shape what we consider to be a traditional classroom environment?
How would you forecast the future of AR in an educational context?
This OER was created by Agnes Garrioch and Braden Litt for the A2: Open Education Resource task of ETEC 523: Mobile and Open Education, as part of the Masters of Educational Technology program at the University of British Columbia.
With more than 10 years in education as a Grade 7/8 teacher, Agnes Garrioch is also her school’s educational technology coach. Agnes is intrigued by Augmented Reality and the influence and impact it will have in her classroom. She hopes to see more educational resources incorporating Augmented Reality to engage and provide deeper learning experiences for students.
Braden is a Grade 6/7 general classroom teacher for the past 5 years, including heading the technology committee at his school. Braden has developed a special interest in Augmented Reality throughout the duration of ETEC523. He hopes that the development of AR technologies will become more educator friendly and accessible to all.
