Children have access to electronic devices and the internet 24:7 nowadays, and with increasing access come concerns for the safety and emotional-wellbeing of youth. In the United States, the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was enacted by Congress in 2000 in response to this concern, offering incentives to schools that were in compliance with their standards and policies (Canada does not currently have similar protection acts in place, though many are pushing for this to change). With many schools moving toward 1:1 devices, supervising student activity online is becoming more challenging as educators try to ensure that students are not accessing any inappropriate information or participating in/becoming the victim of cyberbullying. An additional concern with 1:1 technology in the classroom is ensuring that students are focused on the lesson rather than becoming distracted by the device in front of them.
This was the state of technology in schools when ventures such as Securly and its competitors were conceptualized. In early 2020, Covid-19 quickly escalated the concerns around student safety, well-being, and focus when it forced schools to transition online. This triggered rapid growth in Securly's customer base and opened the market up to the creation of many new ventures focusing on web filtering and device management. Though students have returned to physical classrooms, the concerns around their safety and emotional-wellbeing continue to loom large as parents and educators look to Securly and its competitors to keep children safe online.
