Gertrude Ewing (far left) and the foreign language faculty in 1954
Indiana State University's chapter of Eta Sigma Phi was founded in 1952 under the leadership of Latin professor Miss Gertrude Ewing. Our charter connects us with one another and with outstanding Classics students at over 200 colleges and universities across the country. Over the years Gamma Alpha chapter members have served in society leadership roles at the national and local level. Our chapter activities and accomplishments have been recognized as exemplary at ISU and beyond.
Eta Sigma Phi, 1967
Nationally Eta Sigma Phi had its beginning in 1914 when a group of students in the Department of Greek at the University of Chicago organized an undergraduate classical club to which honor students in Greek and Latin were elected to membership.
The purposes of our chapter and the national hons society are to develop and promote interest in classical study among the students of colleges and universities; to promote closer fraternal relationship among students who are interested in classical study, including inter-campus relationship; to engage generally in an effort to stimulate interest in classical study, and in the history, art, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome.
