SOCIOLOGY ASSIGNMENT
a) Define the following as used in sociology of education
• Socialization - Process of building group values into the individual or the process through which the individual is cultured.
• Socializer – Person doing the socialization, may be a parent at home, teacher in school or a religious leader in a religious organization.
b) Explain five factors that may hinder socialization
• Lack of common language – for communication to take place, language that can be understood universally should be in place for people to socialize otherwise language barrier will hinder socialization.
• Rural urban migration – The movement from one environment to a totally different environment and change of friends and social group may hinder the socialization level.
• Schooling – school comes with its commitments on what the individual needs to cover as per the curriculum hence socialization and acquiring of other social aspects get affected.
• Working parents or caretakers – this reduces time with the young children who need to be guided, talked to and embraced for proper upbringing.
• Media influence – media has a variety of content that influence the way the growing young people behave, language and content that is available in the mass media.Current social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, whattsap and tiktok get the young people glued to gadgets like smart phones limiting their outdoor socialization level.
c) Explain the relationship between socialization and education
• Both socialization and education are processes that try to equip the leaner with necessary skills, attitude and knowledge.
• Both involve acquisition of new aspects and perceptions of life that include attitude, knowledge and skills.
• Socialization can be planned or unplanned, while education involves planning and scheming in a particular curriculum. The end results are same since learner has to change as per the goals and objectives of the agent.
Both require a conducive environment in order to succeed or meet the objectives.
Socialization and education have to be done by agents of that particular knowledge for example experience parents, religious leaders and teachers.
Cultural, traditions and values can be thought during the process of socializing or teaching.
Socialization takes place throughout the life of an individual depending the environment where he/she is while education has a timeline which is describe as terminal.
Socialization can be positive or negative depending on the socializer’s objective while Education in many cases dwells in the positive range.
Education takes place in an institution set up (school) while socialization can take place in any environment where the socialisee is at the moment (e.g. market, party, church et
