Essex Mill is a historic water-powered grist mill located in Tappahannock, Virginia. Built over a century ago, it served Essex County by grinding grain and supporting the community. This site is dedicated to saving Essex Mill and sharing its rich history.
Essex Mill stands as one of the last surviving reminders of our region’s hardworking, rural past. For generations, this water-powered grist mill served the community by grinding grain, baking bread, and even operating a small post office and bake shop. It was the last operating mill in Essex County, and is now the last standing mill in Essex County. Its sturdy frame and original equipment — much of it dating back over a century — remain as a testament to the skill, resilience, and pride of those who built and ran it.
Though the wheels have long stopped turning, the story of Essex Mill has not.
This website is dedicated to preserving that story.
