1) Once a Runner by John L. Parker
Why read? - This is the running classic book. It allows hs and college distance runners to relate to the life of running with their teammates. Its a book that the Sunday jogger won't get. It also touches on the obsessiveness of the long distance runner.
2) Running with the Buffaloes by Chris Lear
Why read? - Another team-focused book. This one is really cool for me as the author ran high school and college track and xc at the same time that I did. The season long path towards a common goal is one that all of you should embrace. The book also contains some cool insights into the extreme training methods of high level collegiate programs and should comfort you that you really aren't running that much yet!!
3) Again to Carthage by John L. Parker
Why read? - If you liked Once a Runner, you must read this follow-up to check in on our hero Quenton Cassidy.
4) Marathon Man by Bill Rodgers
Why read? - I just love Bill Rodgers' story. He just wasn't that good but when he started training like a mad man, he became the best marathoner in the world. This message is very important. Every runner develops at a different pace and may respond more favorably to different training stimulus.
5) Running with the Legends by Michael Sandrock
Why read? - This book is a little dated as these "Legends" were all legends a long time ago now. It does however give great insight into many different runners who were all successful despite their wildly different backgrounds.
