A college or university does not need to know about your experience and enjoyment of a topic, but they are very interested in understanding why you want to become a college or university student.
This is where a person who has not written an essay before or has not done it in a long time, might begin to get very frustrated. It is not that they have a problem writing the essay, but that they are not sure how to start. They might feel that they have to write the whole thing, which is not necessarily the case.
Often a college or university will ask that you go over your essay with them and give them feedback. They want to make sure that they understand your purpose for writing the essay and how you intend to use the essay. They will also want to know your intent when you first created the topic and any other outside influences that you might have had on the topic.
