ESRA symposium on digital twins at Strathclyde
The symposium took place at the University of Strathclyde in the City of Glasgow over two days, the 30th November and the 1st December 2023. We were joined by a number of researchers both from industry and academia on the topic of digital twinning in engineering. The objective of the symposium was to showcase the research and to provide a venue for all to come together and discuss the recent advances on digital twinning. In addition, the symposium identified a group of likeminded researchers keen to advance the state of the art with their scholarship, including reviewing scientific papers, mentoring younger researchers and leading on different aspects of the research. Industry talks were about autonomous vehicles from Bosch and rigorous computing for verified simulation from UKAEA. Talks from academia spanned quite a broad range of disciplines including, system, aerospace and earthquake engineering, biostatistics and foundation of machine learning. Researchers from academia included the University of Liverpool, University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham, TU Dublin and the University of Strathclyde. We also had a few (3-5) people joining online from overseas. Overall, the symposium has provided the unique opportunity to see so many scholars’ work at once within a dense programme of talks. We believe the symposium has facilitated an even denser network of collaboration and has served as an occasion to exchange ideas and existing work. Towards the end and after the talks, a discussion took place to gather thoughts and criticism about the current views and broader perspectives. Overall, the discussion was very helpful to identify new exciting directions. We are very pleased with the symposium and hope to see more of these events in the future in other institutions.
