Phase 1: Design
Phase 1: Design
During ESPR's early phases, many different designs were considered. Originally, a fiberglass plate was to be molded to be able to attach all the components to. This was later replaced by the adjustable slide tube system seen in the final design. In the early render, the original attatchment points are still visible as this was supposed to insert into backpack style straps.
Earlier concept sketches included different solutions to the challenge of achieving a low cost design with the capabilities for at least two degrees of freedom. Potential solutions included servo motors, linear actuators, and other alternatives. Ultimately, many solutions did not meet the standards that ESPR needed in terms of weight, power, accuracy, and size.
