Before we start the lesson, let's play a game! The game is called Forbidden Words. Here are the instructions to play the game:
In this game, each student will receive a different forbidden word. The forbidden word is a word that is not allowed to be said during the game later. The forbidden word will be chosen through a discussion between the students and the teacher.
After everyone receives their forbidden word, write it down on a post and put it on your forehead (make sure the student does not see it!).
When everything is set, talk and ask each other questions! Try your best to make the other students say their forbidden words.
The students who said the forbidden words are eliminated from the game but still can participate in the talk to eliminate the other students.
Have fun talking and happy playing! 😆
In this section, you will listen to a small talk between a guest and a hotelier. While listening to the dialogue, try to answer these questions:
What topics were discussed in the talk?
What questions were asked by the guest?
How did the hotelier respond?
Let's learn how to give responses and come up with follow-up questions!
Listen to the dialogue below. Pause in between the dialogues and predict how they will continue. The video will show you when you have to pause and make predictions. After making predictions, you can continue playing the audio to check whether your predictions were right. Then, take turns one by one reading the dialogue to practice your pronunciation. You will receive feedback and corrections from your teacher.
This time, you will listen to an example of bad small talk. Listen to the audio and analyze what is lacking in this talk. Then, give suggestions on the problems you pointed out. Here are some guiding questions that can help you:
What was lacking in this dialogue?
What could the hotelier have done to provide a better experience?
How could the recommendations be improved?
Identify at least two specific follow-up questions the hotelier could have asked to make the interaction more engaging.
This is the scoring rubric for the assessment. Pay attention to what aspects are being evaluated. Good luck!
It's review time! Let's review the language expressions you have heard and learned in this lesson by doing a game. Find a partner and make a pair. If you are doing self-learning, you can do the game by yourself by clicking the start game below. If you are in the class, find a partner and make a pair! The teacher will share the screen, where there will be jumbled sentences related to small talk. Put the words in the correct order, and if you know the answer, run up to the front of the class and say the answer with the right pronunciation and intonation. If you manage to do it correctly, you get a score.
Awesome! You just finished the fifth lesson. You can continue to the next lesson, which is still about small talk, but the next lesson will be speaking-focused! See you on the next page! 🥳👋
