Las Papayas (p.23-38)
In chapter 2 Las Papayas, Esperanza tells Senor Rodriguez who has brought Papayas at her father's request for Esperanza's birthday party, that Papa has been killed working in the field. Papa's funeral lasts three days, and Esperanza does not want to open her birthday presents because it does not feel right and Papa was supposed to be here. We find out that Papa left the house to Esperanza and her Mama, but the land to Tio Luis. Luis wants to buy the house and offers to marry her and threatens to make her life hard when she refuses.

Chapter 1 Inference example:
It was the night before Esperanza's 13th birthday and Papa was late coming from work in the fields. Esperanza had pricked her thumb on a rose thorn and this was considered bad luck. There was talk of bandits in the fields.
I can infer that something bad maybe happened to Papa while working in the field from the information I have after reading.
