In chapter 9, Esperanza cares for Mama who is sick. Mama calls for Abuelita, and Esperanza gives her the blanket and tries to finish it as she sleeps. Since Mama is getting worse, the doctors say she must go to the hospital to get better. Esperanza goes to work to help provide for her family and be strong for Mama. She cut potatoes eyes with Hortensia and Josefina in hopes she will be hired to do more work.
After reading chapter 9, Las Papas the student will complete a gallery walk activity looking at pictures that relate to Esperanza Rising and issues presented to them in California. You will also be able to make connections to how life has changed for Esperanza and her mother.
Gallery Walk
In this activity, you will look at some pictures that relate to the book and respond with a connection or reaction to the picture. Here is an example of the first picture.
