In Chapter 3 entitled Los Higo of Esperanza Rising, Esperanza is awoken from a nightmare by her mother screaming her name because the house is on fire. They struggle to leave the house, while Miguel goes inside for Abuelita. The fire destroys their home. The next day Tio Luis and Marco come by and express their sorrow for another tragedy so soon after Papa's death. Tio Luis offers again to marry Mama, and she says she will consider the proposal. The family and friends agree if Mama does not accept the proposal will destroy more of the ranch. Hortensia tells Mama they are moving to the U.S. to work in California on a farm where there will be jobs for everyone. Mama decides she and Esperanza will go with them and Abuletia will stay at a convent and come when she is better. Abuelita reminds Esperanza to not be afraid of starting over and gives her crocheting to finish for her. Mama tells Luis she will marry him, but he must begin to rebuild the ranch and send a wagon for them to visit Abuelita at the convent. A few nights later Esperanza and Mama escape home, not knowing if they will ever return home.
