In Chapter 8, Las Circuelas, Esperanza spends her first day alone with the babies but they get sick after she feeds them too many raw plums. She feeds them rice water to help their stomachs just like Hortensia would do for her when she was sick. She spends her time talking to Irene and Milena about the strike that is happening today. As they as talking a big dust storm hits them so they take the children and hide in the cabinets until the dust has settled. Everyone is taking turns cleaning up, Esperanzas mother is coughing, and they are discussing about how the strike did not happen today because of the storm. Mama is diagnosed with Valley fever, it may take months for her to feel better if at all.
