Chapters 10 & 11: pgs. 179-214
In Chapters 10 and 11, Las Aguacates and Las Espàrragos, we see Esperanza's priorities shift and attitude change. Esperanza is becoming more mature, taking on the role of caregiver and working in the fields to support her Mama. When Esperanza first arrived, she did not even know how to sweep, so she has certainly grown! After returning from a Japanese market with Miguel, Esperanza even gives beans and rice to those who have less than she does. During these chapters, Esperanza comes to realize that although her and Marta come from different backgrounds and are still part of different groups (workers and strikers), they now share a unique experience and similar priorities at their core.
