In chapter 4 Las Guayabas, Esperanza, her mother, and Hortensia hide inside the back of the wagon so they won’t be seen as they escape from Aguascalientes. Miguel tells Esperanza that his dream is to work for trains and that he is happy but this irritates her because she does not like being n the train. Miguel proceeds to explain how he will one day work for the trains in California, he then tells Esperanza "Even the poor mean can become rich if they work hard enough." Esperanza meets Carmen who tells the group that even though she is poor, she is rich because she has her children, her garden, and memories of the people she loves. When she leaves the train, Esperanza and Miguel watch as Carmen gives a beggar on the train platform some money and food. Miguel tells Esperanza that the poor take care of those who have even less than they do, while the rich only take care of each other.
Objective: The goal of this activity is to dissect the text in order to better understand the information presented to you.
Directions: Hello Red Rose group, today we will be working on reciprocal teaching for Chapter 4. As a group you will need to each have a role. The roles are Summarizer, questioner, clarifier, and predictor if there are more than 4 people in your group two people may have the same role.
The Summarizer will highlight the key ideas in chapter 4 and they will write a small summary that explains the main points.
The Questioner will then pose questions about chapter 4:
-Unclear parts
-Puzzling information
-Connections to other concepts already learned
The Clarifier will address confusing parts and attempt to answer the questions that were just posed.
The Predictor can offer predictions about what the author will tell the group next or, if it's a literary selection, the predictor might suggest what the next events in the story will be.
