Chapters 4-7: pgs. 58-138
Over the course of Chapters 4-7, we are introduced to Marta, a character who is not impressed by Esperanza's background. Marta's attitude serves as a wake up call for Esperanza, especially when she shares that her father died fighting against wealthy landowners like Esperanza's own father. Marta is passionate about workers' rights, and believes that the workers are being treated like kittens. Marta and her mother are migrant workers with no protection and low pay. When Marta shares her plans to strike, she is forced to leave the camp.
When Marta talks about her plans to strike, this means that she is planning to gather with a group to demand better working conditions. Striking is a way to get attention of people who are in charge and request change! Another way to demand change is to protest.
