Joaquín Sorolla

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida was born in Valencia in 1863. Sorolla was only two years old when both of his parents died in a cholera epidemic. He and his younger sister were adopted by their mother’s sister and her husband.

He loved his city, Valencia.

Many of his pictures, often large canvases, were executed 'en plein air', as evidenced by the grains of sand embedded in their densely painted surfaces.

After learning a little bit about Sorolla's biography, we discovered that he painted many Spanish landscapes.

To relate this to our project, each of us has chosen one of his works and we are recreating it using different techiques.

By recreating his paintings, we are not only working on our artistic skills, but also appreciating the art and the landscapes that inspired Sorolla.
