How does it work?
My Young Authors program is growing, and, if you're a Douglas County School District 1st or 2nd Grade teacher, I hope you'll consider being a part of it. Read on to see how it works...
Basically, I have made a program that will help you work through the process of having your students make books to sell to their parents and friends at the end of the year. I would donate time and bring volunteers to help you with it, and in return the proceeds from the sale would go to the ESME Foundation.
The Young Authors program is sold on Teachers Pay Teachers for $15 (proceeds from this also go to the foundation). The program is 67 pages and includes explicit directions for using it, 13 slides to use with students, a 10-page packet for students to work through the publishing process, and editable event programs, crowns, certificates, and rewards. You may check out the program by clicking here...Young Authors program on TPT
If you buy the program and would like help implementing it, I would be available for that. I typically come in alone to introduce the program and give students writing topic ideas. From there, I bring as many volunteers as I can round up and provide monthly small group assistance with revising, editing, designing book covers, illustrations, and About the Author pages. A few teachers last year preferred the lessons to be closer together than once a month. They wanted their students to work on their books in a shorter, more compact time frame and went on to write more books after completing the first. This also worked well. Ideally, I would like to introduce the program to students in the Fall and have 2nd Graders begin the lessons in October or November and 1st Graders begin lessons in December or January. Whatever works best for you and your students is fine with me. Once you commit to the program, we can discuss it, schedule lessons, and recruit volunteers. I will post a link to Signup Genius with my monthly schedules on this page of the website for your reference. I will provide the blank books that students use as well as items for the big sale!
Kids, parents, teachers, and administrators have loved the Book Signing and Selling event. Students typically dress up, tell a little about their experience and their book/s, and sign their creations. Awards can be given for best stories and best pictures (3 awards each), and the selling begins. The best part is seeing the pride on these young authors’ faces.
If this sounds like a program you would like to participate in, please complete the Google Form linked further down this page or contact me at melindaneilander@gmail.com or 775-230-2004 and we can start planning.
If you bought the program previously, I would just ask for you to write a review of it on TPT as your initial commitment. To see how to earn TPT credits for writing reviews, CLICK HERE.
What People Are Saying
"My students absolutely loved writing and creating their own books. The substance of their writing improved greatly. Many of them also started writing more stories on their own at home or in class when they finished their work. The best part was the joy and pride they had when reading their books to their classmates. I can’t wait to participate in Young Authors again this year."
