COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course offers training and practice in intermediate reading and writing, with an emphasis on language structure and vocabulary development for non-native speakers of English. Practice in reading passages from informational and literary texts to support written work. Practice in a variety of writing tasks. Intermediate language skills integrated on the basis of academic tasks and content.

COURSE GOALS

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Use a variety of intermediate reading and critical thinking skills and strategies to analyze and interpret adapted and authentic multi-paragraph texts of limited complexity.

  2. Compose and organize single and multi-paragraph written texts.

  3. Employ a variety of intermediate academic vocabulary, sentence structures, and grammar.

  4. Distinguish a variety of strategies to support academic work.

I have chosen these books carefully to support your learning. Although there are lots of goodies on the web, nothing beats a great textbook. We will use these books to build mastery of English. I hope you will keep them use them to start building your own personal library of English language learning books to have at your fingertips as you continue on your learning journey.

Computer/laptop or smartphone

Ideally, you should have access to a laptop or desktop computer to complete this course. However, I have taken care to design a course that can also be completed from a smartphone. If you intend to complete this course on a phone, please let me know and inform me if there are any problems that arise. Your feedback will help me improve our learning environment to support more students.

Recording Equipment

You will record voice or video comments in this course on various platforms. To do this, you will need either a microphone or webcam connected to your computer or you may record using a smartphone.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE

You will use Canvas, which is accessed through your MyCCSG account for this course. You won't need to create and account or download anything unless you are using a phone as your course access method.

Canvas Student App (recommended for all, required for those who use a phone)

I strongly recommend that you download the free Canvas Student App before course starts you can stay more connected with our course. When prompted to find your school, enter CCSF and then select our ESL 182 course from your Dashboard.

Other Mobile Apps (recommended for all, required for those who use a phone)

Throughout the course I will introduce other tools to support your learning, such as Kahoot!, Flipgrid, Padlet, JamBoard, Google Slides, and Adobe Spark Pages. You will be able to access these apps directly from our Canvas course. I'll tell you more before we use them and I will provide plenty of support so that you will be successful using these tools.


IMPORTANT DATES

Monday August 17, 2020: Class Begins

Friday August 28th: Last day to drop FULL-TERM credit course work in order to qualify for 100% full refund of CA resident enrollment fees, international and nonresident student tuition and capital outlay fees.

Friday September 4th: Last day to add Full-Term credit courses in-person and online using myRAM Portal. Last day to drop credit classes without a 'W', no notation will appear on the student's permanent record.

Monday September 7th: Labor Day Holiday. No Livestream class session. Assignment deadlines will be adjusted this week.

Thursday September 10th: Last day to drop, withdraw or reduce course work in order to qualify for 50% refund of international and nonresident student tuition and capital outlay fees

Thursday September 17th: Last day to request a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) grade option, where available, for all Full-Term courses.

Monday October 12th: Flex Day Holiday. No Livestream class session. Assignment deadlines will be adjusted this week.

Wednesday November 11th: Veteran's Day Holiday. No Livestream class session. Assignment deadlines will be adjusted this week.

Thursday- Sunday November 26 - 29th: Thanksgiving Holiday. Assignment deadlines will be adjusted this week.

Friday - Friday December 11th - 18th: Final Exam Week. Our exam date will be posted later in the semester.

Monday January 11th: Final grades available on myRAM Portal.
