Before taking ESL 47, I often had trouble writing a complete and organized paragraph. I didn’t know how to start, and I usually felt nervous every time I had to write.
However, in this class, I learned how to write clear topic sentences, add supporting details, and finish with a strong conclusion. In addition, writing assignments, from draff to final essays, these useful steps gradually taught me how to use different types of sentences—simple, compound, and complex—with correct punctuation and conjunctions.
I also practiced using transition words to make my writing flow better and learned how to write clear, coherent, and well-organized paragraphs and essays.
Besides that, vocabulary is also one of the most importance part to improve my writing. Learning the prefix and suffix, root words family, help me to expand my new words everyday. For example '' Hazard'' and '' Hazardous'' the word change form Noun to Adjective.
In addition, during this course, I had many chances to practice my writing. One of my first assignment '' the letter to my teacher'' I wrote to my ESL 47 teacher was my favorite one, she gave me a chance not only to show and explain strengths and weaknesses in English more than that, it's a way to express how I feel as a second language speaker.
The other essays, from '' how to manage stress'' or '' why people are pushed out of their countries through immigration'' or the freedom topic '' My Immigration story'' and '' Benefit of Marriage'' were not just homework; they were opportunities for me to express my thoughts and share my personal experiences. This made me believe that, the more I write, the more I feel healing!!!
My favorite assignment was the final project. I had the freedom to choose a personal story, and I decided to write about why I became vegan. I’m really thankful that my professor allowed us to choose our own topics. This made me excited to share something meaningful from my life. The project helped me express myself and also encouraged me to do more research about vegan style and develop my writing skills to support my story.
Overall, this class has helped me build a strong foundation in academic writing. I feel more confident now, and I know these skills will continue to support me in my future college classes and my carrier .
