Sailing double-handed basically means that one drives while one sleeps. Most of the time, one of us only will be on deck. This is an experience of trust. This being said, we also have Jane. She is our auto-pilot, and a key member of the team. Our default shift is 3hrs, reduced to 2hrs when needed, e.g. at night during heavy weather times.
Our prime source of energy will be the engine, which we estimate will need to run (in idle mode :)) less than an hour per day to cover our needs. We also installed 200W solar panels as a complement.
We chose a minimalist path, to be sure to eat diverse meals while optimizing weight and preparation efforts. So we're going with fried dried and have been testing many different kinds. This means that our kitchen is basically a water boiler (Jetboil) mounted on a gimbal from a UK engineering workshop (Safire)
What matters is to be ready vis-a-vis your goals, focusing on the right topics for what you want to accomplish. Our goal is to experience a safe double-handed package on a fun and fast boat. We're not trying to set a time record or to beat competitor A or B, as this is our first attempt. To that end, we are grateful to our friend Tanguy de Lamotte, who's been coaching us this last year. How to communicate between us, how to think "long term" vs. optimizing like for a race near-shore... and of course how to master gybes with the kite in heavy winds :). Tanguy is an amazing human being, in addition to a world-class sailor who sailed around the globe in the Vendee Globe single handed race. And he is now at the forefront of electric boat transportation as CEO of Candela USA. Thank you coach!
"eskoriñ" is our own translation of the word "foiling" in Breton, a Celtic language. Erwan is from Saint Malo in France, and was looking at a name in the local language.
eskoriñ refers to a change of state, going from water to the air. Of course our Pogo 30 isn't a foiler, but Erwan sails a moth as well, and his sons are very involved with the Waszp, a one-design foiler which is increasingly popular. He organizes demo sessions in San Francisco Bay (which will resume in August, after the Pac Cup :)).
