If you want studio-grade audio fidelity and wired precision for mixing or critical listening, choose ESI Extra 10; if you need wireless freedom, safety awareness, and a secure fit for running or outdoor sports, choose Shokz OpenMove. These two devices serve completely different masters: one is a tool for the producer in a quiet room, while the other is a companion for the athlete on the move. There is no middle ground here because their fundamental designs are built to solve opposite problems.
• ESI Extra 10: Delivers an expansive frequency range (15Hz–29kHz) with semi-open back design for accurate mixing, but requires a wired connection and offers zero ambient awareness.
• Shokz OpenMove: Provides an open-ear bone conduction experience that keeps your ears free for safety during workouts, but sacrifices deep bass and high-frequency detail for situational awareness.
• Best for: The ESI Extra 10 is strictly for stationary work where sound accuracy matters most, whereas the Shokz OpenMove is the clear choice for active lifestyles like jogging where visibility and hearing traffic are non-negotiable.
The ESI Extra 10 is not designed for the casual listener who wants to blast music while walking down the street. This is a professional-grade monitoring tool built for those who need to hear every nuance of a recording. The heart of this device lies in its 50mm neodymium drivers, which push a dynamic frequency response from 15Hz to 29kHz. That low-end extension allows you to feel the rumble of a kick drum, while the upper treble ensures that cymbals and vocals retain their crisp definition without muddiness. If you are mixing tracks, editing audio, or producing music, these headphones offer an unfiltered window into your sound.
The semi-open back design is a specific engineering choice that reduces resonances and prevents low-frequency build-up inside the ear cups. This means when you are sitting at your desk with a laptop or audio interface, what you hear is closer to how it will sound on hi-fi speakers than it would on a sealed, closed-back model. The package includes dSONIQ Realphones software, which lets you simulate different acoustic environments, effectively turning your home setup into a virtual control room. You can test how a mix sounds on portable devices or through standard speakers without ever taking the headphones off.

However, this level of precision comes with significant trade-offs regarding mobility. The ESI Extra 10 is a wired device with a 98-inch cable. While this length gives you plenty of room to move around a studio, it fundamentally locks you to a single location near a power source or device. Furthermore, the "None" noise control specification means these headphones do nothing to block out external noise, nor do they leak sound significantly, making them poor choices for any environment where you need to be unaware of your surroundings or where others might be disturbed. They weigh 225 grams, which is substantial compared to sport gear, so wearing them for hours requires a stable, seated posture.
The Shokz OpenMove is built for a completely different reality: the world outside. Its primary purpose is to let you listen to music, podcasts, or calls while keeping both ears open to the environment. Using bone conduction technology, the transducers sit against your cheekbones rather than inside your ear canal. This design ensures that air remains open, meaning you never experience the pressure or fatigue common with traditional in-ear buds. At just 29 grams, the weight is negligible, allowing you to wear them for long runs without feeling weighed down. The wraparound titanium frame is engineered to stay securely in place even during light jogs or intense cardio, ensuring the device does not bounce or fall out.
Safety is the core value proposition here. Because the ear cups do not cover your ears, you remain fully aware of traffic, cyclists, and people around you. This makes the OpenMove one of the best options for runners who cannot afford to isolate themselves from their surroundings. The battery life supports six continuous hours of use, which covers most training sessions or commutes. A quick charge feature helps get you back in action fast, and the sweat-resistant build means you don't have to worry about moisture damage during a hot workout. The Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity ensures a stable link up to 10 meters away from your phone, so you can leave your device in a locker or bag while moving freely.
The trade-off lies in the audio quality relative to a dedicated studio monitor. The frequency range spans 20Hz to 20,000Hz, which is standard for human hearing but lacks the ultra-low and ultra-high extensions of the ESI model. Bone conduction inherently struggles to reproduce deep, punchy bass because the vibration travels differently than air-conducted sound. While the premiumPitch technology delivers balanced audio and rich bass for a bone conduction headset, it will never match the immersive depth of a 50mm driver system. Additionally, the lack of physical buttons for volume control means you rely on touch controls, which can sometimes be finicky if your hands are sweaty or gloved.
• Best for serious audio production: ESI Extra 10 wins with its 32-ohm impedance and 15Hz–29kHz range, offering the flat response needed for professional mixing.
• Best for wireless freedom: Shokz OpenMove takes the lead with Bluetooth 5.1 and a 6-hour battery, eliminating the tether of a 98-inch cable entirely.
• Best for outdoor safety: Shokz OpenMove is the only viable option for jogging or cycling since its open-ear design preserves your ability to hear traffic and surroundings.
• Best for comfort during long sessions: ESI Extra 10 uses leather and metal materials for durability and a custom fit, though its 225g weight is heavier than the 29g Shokz.
• Best for sweat resistance: Shokz OpenMove features a rugged, sweat-proof construction specifically rated for intense workouts, whereas the ESI is not described as weather-resistant.
• Best for versatility of use: ESI Extra 10 includes a 3.5mm jack and a 6.35mm adapter, making it compatible with PCs, interfaces, and mobile devices via cable.
• Best for call clarity: Shokz OpenMove emphasizes crystal clear conversation quality optimized for bone conduction microphones, ideal for taking calls while moving.
• Best for software integration: ESI Extra 10 integrates with dSONIQ Realphones software to simulate various speaker environments, a feature absent in the Shokz.
If I were buying headphones for jogging today, there is no debate: I would choose the Shokz OpenMove. The combination of bone conduction safety, lightweight titanium frame, and sweat resistance makes it the only logical choice for an active runner. Wearing over-ear studio monitors like the ESI Extra 10 outdoors would be dangerous and impractical due to the lack of ambient awareness and the wired constraint. However, if my goal was to mix a track or edit audio in a quiet studio, I would immediately switch to the ESI Extra 10 to leverage its superior frequency response and semi-open design. For the average person torn between these two, the decision ultimately comes down to whether your priority is the road or the booth.
While the Shokz OpenMove is an excellent wireless option for jogging, it is technically a headphone, not a true wireless earbud, using bone conduction instead of in-ear drivers. It excels at safety and comfort for runners, but it does not fit the "earbud" form factor.
Neither product offers active noise cancellation. The ESI Extra 10 is semi-open, meaning it does not block outside noise, while the Shokz OpenMove is open-ear by design, allowing you to hear everything around you. Neither blocks the world; they simply handle it differently.
The ESI Extra 10 is a wired, heavy-duty studio monitor weighing 225 grams, making it cumbersome for children or travel. The Shokz OpenMove is lighter and wireless, but its bone conduction technology is generally aimed at adults and athletes rather than young children.
Price is determined by the intended use case: the ESI Extra 10 includes professional studio drivers and software licenses, while the Shokz OpenMove focuses on durable sport hardware and wireless components. Check the current listing for specific pricing details before purchasing.
